Alimosho LG offers subsidized food items to help households cope with rising costs

Alimosho Local Government has launched its Half-Price Foodstuff Sales Initiative, a direct intervention designed to support households struggling with rising living costs across the council area.

The event, held at the council secretariat in Akowonjo, drew residents, community leaders, market associations, and beneficiaries who described the initiative as timely and impactful.

Speaking at the flag-off, the Executive Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Hon. Akinpelu Ibrahim Johnson, said the initiative became necessary in view of the economic challenges facing families.

“Today marks a significant step in our efforts to support families and ensure that no one goes to bed hungry,” he stated. He added that subnational governments are required to be responsibe and compassionate to complement the efforts of the federal government.

The Chairman explained that the program would provide major staples — such as rice, beans, yam, garri, spaghetti, eggs, and vegetable oil — at 50 percent of their original prices, making them more accessible to low-income households, widows, the elderly, and vulnerable groups.

“This initiative was conceived as a deliberate effort to make essential food items more affordable and accessible to everyone,” he emphasized.

He also assured residents that the food intervention would not be a one-off exercise.

According to him, the gesture aligns with the WISE Agenda, which prioritizes welfare, empowerment, and sustainable development.

“I want to assure our beneficiaries that this is only the beginning. We are committed to expanding this program and introducing more initiatives that promote welfare and sustainable living,” he said.

In a related development, the Leader of the Legislative Arm of the council, Hon. Semiu Rasheed Olamilekan, praised the Executive Chairman for initiating a program he described as people-centered and responsive.

“This initiative speaks directly to the needs of our people and reaffirms our commitment to the welfare of every household,” he noted, adding that Alimosho had chosen to act at a time when many communities were struggling with harsh economic realities.

Hon. Olamilekan added that the discounted food sales represent more than economic relief; they reflect the unity and compassion that define the Alimosho community.

“This program is not just about reducing the cost of food — it is about strengthening the social fabric of our community,” he remarked.

He also commended the administrative team, market associations, and volunteers whose efforts ensured a smooth rollout of the initiative.

As he urged residents to cooperate and maintain orderliness, the Leader of the House reaffirmed the legislature’s support for pro-people policies.

“We will continue to support initiatives that uplift our people and promote inclusive development in Alimosho,” he pledged.

The program is expected to continue monthly as the local government expands its social welfare initiatives, with residents expressing optimism that such steps will help stabilize household spending and enhance overall community well-being.
