Akpabio controversy: A leadership stained by scandal, shameful cost to Nigeria’s national image

In any democratic society, leadership is built on the principles of integrity, accountability, and the unwavering commitment to uphold the rule of law.

Unfortunately, the continued rise of Senator Godswill Akpabio—despite a long trail of allegations, scandals, and controversies—raises serious questions about the moral and institutional rot within Nigeria’s political system.

The latest controversy surrounding his leadership as Senate President, marked by the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, his alleged defiance of court orders, and international scrutiny, has once again placed Nigeria under an embarrassing global spotlight.

The pertinent question remains: What is so special about Senator Akpabio that he remains at the center of national disgrace, even at the expense of Nigeria’s reputation?

A legacy of scandal: Akpabio’s troubled political journey

Senator Akpabio’s political career has been tainted by multiple allegations of corruption, abuse of power, and misconduct spanning his time as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, and now Senate President.

1. As Governor (2007–2015): His tenure was marred by allegations of massive financial mismanagement, with reports of billions siphoned from the state treasury.

The Department of State Services (DSS) and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) raided his residence, reportedly discovering huge sums of money, yet no significant legal action followed.

2. As Minister of Niger Delta Affairs (2019–2022): He oversaw one of the most corruption-ridden agencies, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), where billions meant for regional development were allegedly misappropriated.

A public hearing exposed reckless spending, including the infamous “COVID-19 palliatives” scandal where billions were said to have been used for unverifiable purposes.

His tenure ended with a cloud of unaddressed corruption allegations, yet he faced no consequences.

3. As Senate President (2023–Present): His election as Senate President was met with resistance due to concerns about his credibility, yet he was forcefully installed through political maneuvering.

The current drama surrounding the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for speaking against sexual harassment and Senate bullying further demonstrates his intolerance for dissent.

The Federal High Court’s contempt charge against him and other Senate officials for defying a court order is another indication of his disregard for the rule of law.

Nigeria’s image in international fora: A national embarrassment

The ongoing controversy has already caught the attention of global institutions. The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the United Nations have taken notice of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s case, reflecting growing international concern over Nigeria’s deteriorating democratic values.

With global governance institutions questioning the integrity of Nigeria’s legislative leadership, the country risks being labeled as a failed democracy where power is abused, and justice is silenced. This has direct implications for:

Foreign Investment: Investors avoid nations where governance is unpredictable and the rule of law is undermined.

Diplomatic Relations: Nigeria’s credibility is at stake, making future engagements with international bodies more difficult.

Public Trust in Governance: Nigerians, already disillusioned with leadership failures, see this as further proof that corruption and impunity remain the defining features of the nation’s political class.

Why is Akpabio untouchable?

The biggest question that arises is: Why does Akpabio remain politically relevant despite his tainted record? His ability to evade justice and resurface in higher offices suggests a deeply flawed system where:

Political realignment is a survival tactic – After decamping from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Congress (APC), Akpabio secured ministerial and legislative positions, using party loyalty as a shield against accountability.

Institutions are weak and compromised – Despite numerous corruption allegations, he has never been prosecuted, signaling a broken justice system that protects the powerful.

Nigeria rewards impunity rather than punishing it – Instead of being investigated, Akpabio has continued to be promoted within the political structure.

Conclusion: A call for institutional redemption

Senator Akpabio’s continued leadership despite overwhelming allegations of corruption and misconduct represents a stain on Nigeria’s democracy.

The suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, coupled with blatant disregard for court rulings, is a warning sign that Nigeria’s institutions are under siege by a brand of leadership that thrives on impunity.

If Nigeria must reclaim its dignity, there must be immediate institutional reforms to prevent individuals with questionable integrity from rising to positions of power. Lawmakers and civil society organizations must rally to demand accountability and reject legislative tyranny.

The time has come for Nigeria to choose between true democracy and governance built on deception, corruption, and oppression. The world is watching, and history will judge the choices we make today.
