Abia State under fire over tax policy targeting churches

Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Abia State Chapter, has expressed strong displeasure over the state government’s policy requiring churches to pay taxes on their signposts.

According to the State CAN Chairman, Rev. Ojo Ojó Uduma, the body  leaders described the policy as regrettable, especially since Abia State is reportedly the only state in Nigeria implementing such taxation.

They emphasized that this move may be perceived as anti-church and requested the governor to reconsider the policy.

The Abia State government’s tax policy is part of its broader revenue generation efforts, which include taxing individuals and businesses operating within the state.

However, CAN argued that taxing church signposts is unfair and potentially harmful to the Christian community.

Governor Otti has been urged to engage in a round-table discussion with Christian leaders to find a resolution to this issue.

CAN assured the governor of their support and prayers, hoping for a favorable response.
