The recent appointments and subsequent inauguration of Mr. Chiedu Ebie, Chairman, Governing Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), as Coordinating Director IV in the Directorate of Contact and Mobilisation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, alongside his appointment as Deputy Director-General of the Delta State APC Campaign Council, have once again brought into sharp focus the place of experience, competence and purposeful leadership in public service.

Beyond the political significance of these appointments, they represent another important moment for the Ika Nation in Delta State, which can take pride in the emergence of one of its illustrious sons into positions of greater responsibility at both state and national levels. Indeed, Chiedu Ebie is increasingly demonstrating why he can be described as a special breed of public servant and a priceless gift from the Ika Nation to Delta State and Nigeria.

For a community, one of the greatest sources of pride is to see its sons and daughters distinguish themselves through professional accomplishment, responsible leadership and service beyond their immediate environment. In Ebie, Ika Nation has a worthy example of how professional preparation, administrative experience and commitment to public responsibility can open doors to wider assignments.

His latest appointments, followed by his inauguration into the campaign structures, are therefore more than ceremonial developments. They are a recognition of the experience he brings to the table and an indication of the confidence placed in his ability to contribute to the coordination, mobilisation and strategic engagement required by the political organisations he now serves.

However, the significance of these appointments becomes clearer when viewed against the background of his public-service career.

A lawyer by training, Ebie has traversed important corridors of government and administration in Delta State and the Niger Delta. He served as Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education before becoming Secretary to the Delta State Government between 2019 and 2021. He subsequently assumed the chairmanship of the NDDC Governing Board, placing him at the helm of an institution entrusted with the development aspirations of the oil-producing states of the Niger Delta.

Each of these positions comes with its peculiar demands, requiring sound judgement, administrative competence, stakeholder engagement and the ability to coordinate people and institutions around clearly defined objectives.

As Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, his responsibilities were connected to the development of human capital and the strengthening of the educational system. As Secretary to the State Government, he occupied a strategic position in the machinery of governance, where coordination, policy implementation and interdepartmental collaboration are essential. At the NDDC, his responsibilities extend to regional development, infrastructure, institutional effectiveness and engagement with communities whose expectations of the Commission remain considerable.

This breadth of experience provides a useful context for understanding why his services are now being sought in political assignments at the state and national levels.

The appointment of Ebie as Coordinating Director IV in the Directorate of Contact and Mobilisation of the APC Presidential Campaign Council places him within a broader national political framework. His emergence as Deputy Director-General of the Delta State APC Campaign Council equally gives him a strategic role in the organisation and coordination of political activities within the state.

Both positions demand more than political visibility. They require the ability to build relationships, communicate effectively, coordinate diverse interests and contribute to the collective objectives of a political organisation. In a political environment where stakeholder engagement and effective mobilisation can significantly influence organisational performance, experience in public administration can be an important asset.

His inauguration into these roles consequently marks the beginning of another phase of responsibility in a career already characterised by service across different institutional platforms.

His reported declaration, following his latest political appointment, that he was ready to give his best and that “The work begins now”, captures the spirit of readiness expected of anyone entrusted with a new assignment.

For the Ika Nation, however, the moment carries a significance that extends beyond party politics. It is an opportunity to celebrate a son whose professional journey has brought him into positions of responsibility that connect community aspirations with wider state and national affairs.

To describe Ebie as a priceless gift from the Ika Nation is not merely an expression of ethnic pride or political admiration. It is a recognition of the value of professional preparation, administrative experience and the opportunity to contribute to public affairs beyond one’s immediate community.

Such recognition also carries a responsibility. The community’s pride in his accomplishments must be matched by the expectation that he will continue to uphold the principles of accountability, fairness, service and respect for the people affected by his decisions.

Indeed, the greatest honour a community can derive from one of its own is not simply the number of appointments he receives, but the extent to which his presence in positions of authority advances the common good, and Ebie has proved beyond reasonable doubt that he is well at home with this leadership/ or political philosophy.

For Delta State, Ebie’s emergence into these strategic political positions provides an opportunity for his experience to contribute to organisational effectiveness and constructive political engagement. For Nigeria, his participation in a national campaign structure places him within a broader process of political mobilisation and stakeholder relations. For the Niger Delta, his continued leadership of the NDDC Governing Board carries the expectation that the Commission will pursue its development mandate with seriousness and measurable impact.

These are distinct responsibilities, and each must be assessed according to its objectives and standards of accountability. Yet, taken together, they demonstrate the expanding scope of assignments entrusted to a man whose career has moved through education administration, state government coordination and regional development leadership.

Ika Nation has every reason to celebrate the latest chapter in the journey of one of its illustrious sons. His appointments and subsequent inauguration are important milestones, reflecting an expanding range of responsibilities at a time when experience, coordination and purposeful leadership remain essential to public life.

Chiedu Ebie is, indeed, a special breed: a distinguished son of Ika Nation, a valuable asset to Delta State and a public figure with responsibilities that extend to the national stage.

The assignment before him is to ensure that the confidence represented by these appointments translates into results that justify the trust placed in him.

And therein lies the true meaning of being a priceless gift from one’s community to the state and the nation: not merely to rise to positions of influence, but to use that influence responsibly, serve with purpose and leave institutions and communities better than they were found.
