RULAAC denounces arrests, brutalization of peaceful #EndSARS memorial protesters

Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has strongly condemned the arrest, brutalization, and detention of peaceful protesters commemorating the fourth anniversary of the Lekki Tollgate massacre (#Endsars)

According to the group Executive Director, Com. Okechukwu Nwanguma, this year’s memorial protest, held on October 20, 2024, was violently disrupted by authorities, raising concerns about Nigeria’s disregard for citizens’ rights to freedom of expression and assembly.

The protest aimed to honor victims and advocate for justice and reforms in the security sector. However, the authorities’ response reflects an alarming trend of suppressing citizens’ rights and activism regarding police brutality and governance in Nigeria .

RULAAC emphasized that peaceful protests are legitimate expressions of free speech and assembly, protected under democratic principles.

The use of excessive force against peaceful demonstrators is undemocratic and unjustified, especially considering no offenses were committed.

He urged the government to respect citizens’ rights and ensure accountability for law enforcement agents who violate these rights and abuse their power.
