When performance speaks: Governor Umo Eno’s three years of purposeful governance

In politics, promises are easy to make. What often separates leaders is their ability to translate those promises into measurable outcomes that impact the lives of ordinary citizens.

Three years after assuming office as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno has increasingly found himself at the centre of conversations about governance, development, and leadership performance.

As his administration marked its third anniversary on May 29, 2026, the debate has shifted from campaign rhetoric to a more fundamental question: Has Governor Eno delivered on his mandate?

Available evidence suggests that his administration has made significant strides across critical sectors, particularly in workers’ welfare, infrastructure, healthcare, housing, agriculture, youth development, tourism, and security.

One of the strongest pillars of the administration’s record remains its commitment to workers and retirees. At a time when many states continue to grapple with pension liabilities and welfare concerns, Akwa Ibom has witnessed the payment of billions of naira in pension and gratuity backlogs. The implementation of the ₦80,000 minimum wage, payment of teachers’ allowances, introduction of the ENOMBER 13th-month salary initiative, and recruitment exercises in both the civil service and healthcare sectors have reinforced the perception of a government attentive to the welfare of its workforce.

Infrastructure development has equally become a defining feature of the administration. The construction of over 1,300 kilometres of roads and dozens of bridges across the state reflects a deliberate effort to connect communities, stimulate commerce, and improve accessibility.

More importantly, these projects have not been concentrated in a few urban centres but spread across the 31 local government areas, giving many rural communities a sense of inclusion in the state’s development journey.

Healthcare and education have also received notable attention. The establishment of model healthcare centres across local government areas demonstrates a commitment to improving access to quality healthcare services. In education, investments in school infrastructure and support for basic education projects indicate a recognition that sustainable development begins with human capital development.

Perhaps one of the administration’s most ambitious undertakings is its focus on housing and social welfare. Through estate developments and the ARISE Compassionate Homes initiative, hundreds of families have gained access to decent shelter. Such interventions go beyond physical structures; they restore dignity and offer hope to vulnerable citizens who may otherwise have remained excluded from the benefits of development.

Agriculture, a cornerstone of the ARISE Agenda, is another sector where the government appears determined to leave a lasting legacy. The recent launch of the Tree Crops Revolution, involving the distribution of 620,000 oil palm seedlings, signals a strategic shift toward long-term wealth creation and economic diversification.

Combined with investments in farm infrastructure, equipment leasing, and home farming schemes, the initiative seeks to reposition agriculture as a viable source of income and food security.

The commissioning of multiple projects in Oron Local Government Area further illustrates the administration’s grassroots development philosophy. From a model healthcare centre and youth development facility to road infrastructure and administrative improvements, the projects underscore a commitment to ensuring that development is not confined to the state capital alone.

Youth development has emerged as another area of focus. The construction of youth development centres, designed to provide ICT training, vocational skills, and entrepreneurial opportunities, reflects an understanding that the future of the state depends largely on how effectively it prepares its young population for emerging economic realities.

Tourism and investment promotion have also become key elements of the Governor’s development strategy. The transformation of previously neglected sites into modern tourism assets, including the ARISE Palm Resort and other hospitality projects, demonstrates an effort to broaden the state’s economic base and attract both visitors and investors.

Security, often described as the foundation of development, has not been left out. The creation of a standalone Ministry of Internal Security and Waterways, alongside investments in security equipment and the establishment of a Security Trust Fund, points to a proactive approach toward safeguarding lives and property.

Of course, no administration is without challenges. Expectations remain high, and citizens will continue to demand faster execution of projects, greater economic opportunities, and broader social impact. However, governance is often judged not by perfection but by direction, commitment, and measurable progress.

As Governor Umo Eno enters the final year of his first term before the next electoral cycle gathers momentum, his administration’s scorecard provides substantial material for public assessment. Whether viewed through the lens of infrastructure, workers’ welfare, agriculture, healthcare, housing, youth empowerment, or tourism, there is a growing body of evidence that suggests a government actively pursuing its development agenda.

Ultimately, political endorsements may generate headlines, but it is performance that sustains public confidence. In Akwa Ibom today, supporters of Governor Umo Eno argue that his achievements over the past three years speak louder than political slogans.

As the state looks toward the future, the true verdict will continue to come not from political platforms but from the people whose lives are touched by the policies and projects of government.
