University of Benin Alumni unite in Massachusetts to celebrate two decades of global impact

University of Benin Alumni Association North America (UBAANA) has celebrated two decades of fostering excellence, leadership and service with a landmark 20th Anniversary Reunion held from July 23 to 26, 2026, in Massachusetts, bringing together alumni, university leaders, traditional rulers, public officials, entrepreneurs and friends of the University of Benin from across North America and beyond.

The four-day reunion served as a celebration of UBAANA’s achievements since its establishment in 2006 while reinforcing the association’s commitment to strengthening alumni engagement, supporting the University of Benin and inspiring future generations through mentorship, philanthropy and professional development.

Participants enjoyed a rich programme that combined networking, leadership discussions, innovation, cultural experiences and family activities. Events included a welcome reception, Boston city tours, a Boston Harbor boat cruise, an interactive leadership session, an artificial intelligence innovation showcase, a variety night, the association’s annual business meeting, a family picnic and a glamorous gala and awards dinner.

Speaking at the event, UBAANA President, Engr. Osasere F. Osifo, described the reunion as more than a celebration of the association’s past accomplishments.

“Our 20th Anniversary Reunion was far more than a celebration of our past. It was a reaffirmation of our shared purpose and our collective future. Over three memorable days, we celebrated excellence, honoured distinguished alumni, strengthened lifelong friendships, showcased innovation, and renewed our commitment to supporting the University of Benin. The unity, enthusiasm and spirit demonstrated throughout the reunion remind us that UBAANA’s greatest achievements are still ahead of us,” he said.

A major highlight of the reunion was the keynote address delivered by Chief (Dr.) Charles Uwensuyi-Edosomwan, SAN, who challenged alumni to embrace visionary leadership, institutional development and strategic philanthropy.

Drawing lessons from globally renowned universities, he encouraged graduates to move beyond personal success by investing collectively in sustainable initiatives capable of strengthening the University of Benin for generations.

The reunion also featured an engaging interactive leadership session led by Hon. Chief Dr. Billy Famous Osawaru, member representing Orhionmwon/Uhunmwode Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

The lawmaker discussed governance, public service and national development while encouraging stronger collaboration between Nigerians in the diaspora and leaders at home.

Participants exchanged ideas on nation-building, youth empowerment, public accountability and the important role alumni associations can play in driving sustainable development and positive societal change.

Innovation equally occupied a central place during the reunion as Canada-based technology entrepreneur and University of Benin alumnus, Mike Okoli, unveiled SabiPT, an Afrocentric artificial intelligence platform designed around African languages, cultures and realities.

The live demonstration generated widespread interest among participants and sparked discussions on the growing opportunities for African-led artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship and technology-driven development across the continent and the global African diaspora.

One of the most anticipated moments of the celebration was the Gala and Awards Dinner, during which distinguished alumni were honoured for their outstanding contributions in their various fields.

Among the award recipients were Chief (Dr.) Charles Uwensuyi-Edosomwan, SAN, who received the UBAANA Distinguished Alumni Award for Excellence in Law and Leadership; H.I.M. Professor Fuankem Achankeng I, honoured for Traditional Leadership and Global Service; Hon. Chief Dr. Billy Famous Osawaru, recognised for Excellence in Public Service and Legislative Leadership; and Prince (Dr.) Richard Oma Ahonaruogho, SAN, honoured for Outstanding Alumni Leadership.

The anniversary celebration attracted several distinguished personalities, including H.I.M. Professor Fuankem Achankeng I, The Nyatema of Atoabechied, accompanied by Her Majesty the Queen; Chief (Dr.) Charles Uwensuyi-Edosomwan, SAN; Prince (Dr.) Richard Oma Ahonaruogho, SAN, former Worldwide President of the University of Benin Alumni Association; and Hon. Chief Dr. Billy Famous Osawaru.

The University of Benin also reaffirmed its strong partnership with UBAANA during the reunion.

Although the Vice Chancellor, Professor Edoba Bright Omoregie, was unable to attend physically or virtually, he conveyed a goodwill message congratulating the association on its remarkable journey over the past 20 years.

He commended UBAANA for its unwavering commitment to alumni engagement and encouraged members to remain united in supporting the university’s academic excellence, research and global reputation.

Also participating virtually was Professor Eddie Erhagbe, who highlighted the indispensable role of alumni in institutional development.

He challenged graduates to deepen their commitment to mentorship, philanthropy, strategic partnerships and active participation in alumni affairs, while applauding UBAANA’s achievements over the past two decades.

The successful hosting of the reunion was widely credited to the Massachusetts Chapter under the leadership of Rev. Iguodala Girolamo, whose executive committee coordinated what many attendees described as one of the finest reunions in the association’s history.
UBAANA also recognised the efforts of the Local Organising Committee, chaired by Mrs. Isoken Owie, as well as volunteers, sponsors and supporters whose contributions ensured the success of the anniversary celebration.

Looking ahead, the association reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening alumni engagement, promoting leadership development, supporting the University of Benin and expanding opportunities for students and graduates worldwide.

As part of activities marking the beginning of its third decade, UBAANA announced that its 21st Annual Reunion will be hosted by its DMV Chapter, representing Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia, with expectations of another gathering that will further consolidate the association’s legacy of excellence, leadership, service and global impact.
