Tinubu at Windsor Castle: Reaffirms Nigeria-UK ties, shared democratic values

President of Nigeria, Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has emphasized the enduring bonds of friendship, shared history, and mutual aspiration between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

Addressing a distinguished gathering including King Charles III, Queen Camilla, Prince William and Catherine, the Princess of Wales, the Nigerian leader highlighted the pivotal role of both nations in shaping democratic governance, cultural exchange, and international cooperation.

“This is a profound honour,” Tinubu said, speaking as the first Nigerian leader to address guests at Windsor Castle, a centuries-old symbol of British heritage. “Our two nations share more than just history; we share a vision of progress and resilience.”

President Tinubu paid tribute to Britain’s historical contributions to democratic governance.

He reflected on the Magna Carta of 1215, which laid the foundation for the rule of law, parliamentary democracy, and civic responsibility worldwide.

He also highlighted the intellectual legacy of British philosophers Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Edmund Burke, as well as literary icons such as William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens, whose work continues to influence cultures globally.

In a nod to the deep institutional links between the two countries, Tinubu noted that Nigeria’s legal system, parliamentary structures, and civil service frameworks were influenced by British traditions, adapted to serve Nigeria’s unique national context.

Yet, as the president stressed, it is the people who form the strongest bridge between Nigeria and the UK. Highlighting the Nigerian diaspora’s contribution to British society, he specifically mentioned doctors, nurses, and other professionals working in the National Health Service, as well as prominent athletes such as rugby star Maro Itoje, footballers Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze, and boxing champion Anthony Joshua. “Our people, through skill, talent, and determination, continue to strengthen the bonds that link our nations,” Tinubu said.

President Tinubu also underscored Nigeria’s commitment to the Commonwealth of Nations, describing Nigeria as one of its largest and most dynamic members. He stressed the importance of continued collaboration to address global challenges, including regional security threats emanating from the Sahel.

“Nigeria carries an enormous responsibility to help safeguard regional stability,” he said, noting that partnership with the United Kingdom remains essential in confronting these challenges.
Despite these security concerns, Tinubu painted a picture of optimism for Nigeria’s future. He spoke of a nation of young dreamers, ambitious entrepreneurs, and resilient citizens determined to realize their full potential.

The address, delivered with warmth and gravitas, reflected a blend of historical reflection, recognition of contemporary contributions, and forward-looking partnership. It reinforced Nigeria’s commitment to collaboration, mutual respect, and shared values with the United Kingdom, signaling an era of strengthened diplomatic and cultural engagement.
