Stillness in Storm: Methodist youths find strength, unity in faith at historic Lagos convention

For four memorable days, Igbobi College, Yaba, Lagos, was transformed into a vibrant centre of worship, fellowship, learning, competition, culture and youthful celebration as young people from the Methodist Church Nigeria, Archdiocese of Lagos Mainland, gathered for the first-ever Archdiocesan Youth Fellowship Convention.

Held from Thursday, August 20 to Sunday, August 23, 2026, the historic convention brought together youths from the four dioceses under the Archdiocese of Lagos Mainland — Lagos North, Lagos Central, Lagos West and Lagos Mainland.

With the theme, “Stillness in the Storm,” and Exodus 14:14 as the anchor Scripture, the convention sought to remind young people that faith in God remains a source of strength, direction and hope even when confronted with uncertainty, pressure and difficult circumstances.

From the moment participants began arriving on Thursday, it was evident that the gathering would be more than another item on the church calendar.

Old friends reunited, new relationships were established, and participants gradually settled into the camp in an atmosphere filled with excitement and anticipation.

The accommodation and feeding arrangements provided throughout the programme also contributed to a comfortable camp experience, allowing participants to concentrate on the spiritual, educational, social and recreational activities lined up for the four-day gathering.

One of the early attractions was the “One of a Kind” signature wall, which quickly became a memorable feature of the convention.

Participants signed their names on the wall, leaving behind a personal mark on what was described as a historic first gathering of the Archdiocesan Youth Fellowship.

A convention begins in praise

The first evening opened with an energetic Praise and Worship session, setting the spiritual tone for the convention.

Participants were subsequently introduced to the camp rules and regulations, followed by a welcoming charge and an interactive session before dinner.

The activities continued on Friday morning with quiet time, room devotion and cleaning before participants gathered for the first Bible study, titled “The Power of Faith and Stillness.”

Based on Exodus 14:14, the Bible study challenged the youths to understand that stillness before God does not represent weakness or surrender to defeat.

Rather, it encouraged them to remain confident in God, particularly when faced with situations beyond their control.

The message was especially relevant to young people navigating education, career choices, relationships, financial pressures, family responsibilities and an uncertain future.

The teaching emphasised the need to trust God even when circumstances appear overwhelming and when immediate solutions seem impossible.

Bishops join youths for Eucharist and opening ceremony

Following breakfast, participants gathered for the Eucharist Service and Opening Ceremony.
The Eucharist became one of the significant spiritual moments of the convention, with the bishops of the four dioceses joining other ministers and church leaders to worship alongside the young people.

Their presence underscored the importance attached to youth development and participation within the church.

The Opening Ceremony subsequently brought the four dioceses together in an atmosphere of unity, worship and celebration, officially setting the convention in motion.

For many participants, the sight of young people from different dioceses worshipping together reinforced the importance of building a stronger and more united youth fellowship.

Lagos Central Shines in Bible Quiz
The spiritual activities were complemented by healthy competition when representatives of the four dioceses competed in the Bible Quiz Competition.

The competition tested participants’ knowledge of the books of Exodus and Ephesians, challenging contestants on their understanding, memory and ability to apply biblical knowledge.

Supporters gathered around their representatives, cheering and encouraging them throughout the contest.

At the end of the competition, Lagos Central Diocese emerged victorious, recording the first major competitive success of the convention.

The youths also demonstrated their musical talents during the Sing-Song Competition, where the four dioceses showcased creativity, teamwork and musical ability.

The performances generated excitement among participants and supporters, further strengthening the spirit of friendly rivalry.
Friday’s activities continued with an interactive session and Praise Hour before dinner, while Impartation Night brought the day’s programme to a spiritual conclusion through worship, prayer and reflection.

Youths challenged to trust their divine defender

Saturday began with quiet time and aerobics before participants proceeded to the second Bible study, titled “The Warrior Who Fights For You – Knowing Your Divine Defender.”

The study, based on Romans 8:31, reminded participants of God’s presence and encouraged them to confront life’s challenges with faith rather than fear.

The message challenged the youths to depend on God’s strength when making difficult decisions and facing uncertainty.

It also encouraged them to recognise that their future should not be determined solely by present circumstances but by their relationship with God, personal discipline and willingness to pursue their God-given purpose.

Business session encourages youths to think about their future

The spiritual programme was complemented by practical discussions during the Family Meeting and Business and Investment Session.

The session encouraged the youths to become more intentional about personal development, financial responsibility, entrepreneurship and their professional futures.

Participants were encouraged to look beyond immediate challenges and begin developing the knowledge, skills and mindset required to build sustainable careers and contribute meaningfully to society.

For many young people, the session provided an opportunity to reflect on the connection between faith, work, financial responsibility and personal purpose.

Lagos Central Completes Double Victory
The football competition became another major attraction as the four dioceses battled for supremacy on the field.

The matches generated considerable excitement, with participants turning out to support their respective teams.

Friendly rivalry, chants, cheering and encouragement characterised the competition as the youths demonstrated teamwork and sporting spirit.

When the final whistle sounded, Lagos Central Diocese emerged as football champion, completing a remarkable double after earlier winning the Bible Quiz.

Its performance became one of the major highlights of the convention and generated further excitement among members and supporters of the diocese.

Owambe Night Brings Culture to the Fore
Following the day’s activities, participants gathered for worship, dinner and the Award Night, where achievements and contributions during the convention were recognised.

But one of the most anticipated moments came later with the colourful Owambe Night.

The event transformed the atmosphere as participants appeared in vibrant traditional outfits representing different tribes and cultures.

Music, dancing, laughter and cheering filled the hall as the youths celebrated their diversity and enjoyed one another’s company.

Beyond the entertainment, Owambe Night offered an opportunity for participants to appreciate Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity.

The event demonstrated that cultural differences need not divide young people and that diversity can become a source of strength when people are united by a common purpose.

Faith remains at the centre

Despite the competitions, entertainment and social activities, the spiritual objective of the convention remained central.

The two Bible studies, worship sessions, prayer meetings and other spiritual activities repeatedly returned participants to the theme of trusting God during difficult seasons.

The message of stillness became a recurring reminder that young people do not have to face life’s storms alone.

The convention also created an environment where participants could discuss experiences, build friendships, share ideas and learn from young people from other dioceses.

For some, it was an opportunity to reconnect with old friends. For others, it was the beginning of new relationships that could continue long after the convention.

Teamwork behind the success

The successful running of the convention also depended heavily on the work of several teams operating behind the scenes.

The Protocol, Medical, Welfare, Music, Technical, Logistics, Security and Media units all contributed to the smooth running of the programme.

Camp rules also helped maintain order and ensure the comfort and safety of participants.

Youths were expected to be punctual, dress decently, maintain cleanliness within the environment and toilets, respect rest periods and report cases of illness to the medical team.

The guidelines helped maintain discipline while allowing participants to enjoy the activities in an organised environment.

Church leaders, Youth Fellowship officials, camp officials, volunteers and members of the various committees also played important roles in making the historic convention possible.

The Youth President described the gathering as a historic milestone for the Archdiocesan Youth Fellowship and expressed appreciation to everyone who contributed to its success.

A bittersweet farewell

Sunday morning brought the four-day gathering to an end with the Thanksgiving Service.

Participants gathered to give thanks to God for the successful convention, the lessons learned, the friendships established and the experiences shared.

After the service, however, the atmosphere gradually changed.

The excitement of the previous days gave way to the reality of departure as participants packed their belongings and prepared to leave Igbobi College.

Friends hugged, exchanged contacts and said their goodbyes.

Some promised to remain in contact and meet again, while others paused to take photographs and preserve memories of the historic gathering.

There was a mixture of happiness and sadness — happiness over the memories created and sadness that four days of fellowship had come to an end.

As bags were carried out of the camp and participants departed, it became clear that the convention had created memories that would extend beyond the closing ceremony.

More than a church programme

Looking back, the 2026 Archdiocesan Youth Fellowship Convention was more than another event on the church calendar.

It represented the beginning of a new chapter for the young people of the Archdiocese of Lagos Mainland.

It created a platform where faith, fellowship, culture, learning, friendship, talent and youthful energy could exist side by side.

From the “One of a Kind” signature wall to the Bible Quiz, Sing-Song Competition, football tournament, Bible studies, business and investment session, Award Night and Owambe Night, every aspect of the programme contributed to the experience.

Yet, beyond the competitions and celebrations, one message remained at the heart of the convention: “The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.”

As the youths finally left Igbobi College on Sunday morning, they carried more than their bags and personal belongings.

They carried new friendships, unforgettable memories, renewed faith and a message that could guide them through the challenges ahead.

The storms of life may come in different forms — uncertainty, disappointment, fear, financial challenges, career struggles or difficult decisions — but the convention reminded the young people that they can remain still, trust God and hold on to their faith.

The first Archdiocesan Youth Fellowship Convention may have ended, but its message is likely to continue resonating among the young people who attended.

Stillness in the storm, they were reminded, is not the absence of trouble. It is the confidence that God remains present even in the middle of it.
