Sokoto Governor showcases achievements amid 2027 political speculations

Political atmosphere in Sokoto State, the seat of the caliphate, is increasingly attracting national attention as discussions surrounding the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum.

At the center of these conversations is Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, whose growing political visibility and close association with President Bola Tinubu have continued to fuel speculations about his long-term political ambitions and strategic role within the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Governor Ahmad Aliyu, a former Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, has in recent months intensified efforts to showcase the achievements of his administration, especially in the areas of security, education, infrastructure and social welfare.

Political observers in the state believe the governor’s body language whenever he appears alongside the President suggests a strong determination to ensure the APC records victory in the 2027 presidential election.

Despite the growing political narratives, the Sokoto State Government insists that its major focus remains governance and the delivery of democratic dividends to the people.

One of the key areas repeatedly highlighted by the administration is the fight against insecurity.

The governor’s administration has procured and distributed operational vehicles to various security agencies operating in the state as part of efforts to strengthen intelligence gathering and improve rapid response to criminal activities.

The administration also views education as a major weapon against insecurity. Government officials argue that the large number of out-of-school children and vulnerable youths contributes significantly to rising social instability across parts of northern Nigeria.

To address this challenge, the state government has expanded the Almajiri integrated schools and the Islamiyya education programme aimed at combining Western and Islamic education.

The initiative, according to government officials, is designed to equip children with formal education while preserving Islamic values and reducing their vulnerability to criminal recruitment.

Speaking on the achievements of the administration, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media said no fewer than 13 major projects were either commissioned or unveiled in 2025 alone.

According to him, several of the projects attracted the presence of high-profile dignitaries, including ministers, governors and other top government officials.

Among the projects highlighted were road dualisation works within Sokoto metropolis and the commencement of construction of Government Girls Science Academies in selected local government areas of the state.

The projects were officially flagged off by federal government representatives and senior political figures.

The governor’s media aide also pointed to several social intervention programmes introduced by the administration.

These include loan disbursement schemes for women through the newly established state-owned microfinance bank, aimed at boosting small-scale businesses and improving economic opportunities for female entrepreneurs.

In addition, the Sokoto State Zakkat and Endowment Commission has continued the distribution of food items and financial assistance to widows, orphans and vulnerable residents across the state.

Government officials say the intervention is part of efforts to cushion the effects of economic hardship and strengthen community support systems.

The administration has equally emphasized institutional development through the commissioning of the Sokoto State Investment House as well as the provision of office accommodation for financial institutions, including JAJ Bank Nigeria Plc.

In the health sector, the government says it has embarked on the construction of a 950-bed capacity Sokoto State University Teaching Hospital located along Airport Road in Sokoto.

The hospital project is expected to improve healthcare delivery and reduce medical referrals outside the state once completed.

Environmental sustainability has also emerged as one of the administration’s talking points.

According to the governor’s Special Adviser, Sokoto remains one of the few states prioritising tree planting campaigns as part of broader environmental and security strategies.

The state government believes the initiative will help combat desertification, improve the environment and reduce the activities of criminal elements who often exploit isolated forest areas for illegal operations.

Thousands of assorted tree seedlings have reportedly been distributed to youths and residents across the state.

Agriculture remains another critical sector receiving attention from the administration. The government recently flagged off the annual wheat farming season in parts of the state and distributed improved wheat seeds to farmers in a bid to boost food production and support local agriculture.

The administration has also undertaken the renovation of the Sokoto State Courts Complex as part of efforts to improve judicial infrastructure and strengthen the justice delivery system.

As political calculations ahead of 2027 continue to shape conversations across the country, supporters of Governor Ahmad Aliyu insist that his performance in office will strengthen his political standing and earn him another mandate from the electorate.

However, opposition voices and political analysts maintain that beyond projects and political endorsements, the ultimate judgment will rest with the people of Sokoto State, who will decide whether the administration has truly delivered the expected dividends of democracy.
