Nigeria Police Force has clarified the status of Vincent Makinde, a dismissed police officer who was recently seen in a viral video claiming to be an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) detained without cause.

Subsequently, renowned legal luminary and Human Rights Activist Mr Femi Falana, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has demanded his release.

According to the Force Police Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, police, Makinde was dismissed in 2022 following a thorough investigation and orderly room trial for serious offences including abuse of office, extortion, and gross misconduct.

The police stated that Makinde escaped from lawful custody while awaiting prosecution and resurfaced in June 2024, parading himself as a bonafide member of the Nigeria Police Force.

He was subsequently re-arrested and restrained using leg cuffs due to his violent and aggressive behavior.

The police justified the use of leg restraints, stating that it is a global practice for managing violent and uncooperative suspects.

The Force also assured that it remains committed to transparency, accountability, and the rule of law and that Makinde will face prosecution for his crimes.

The Nigeria Police Force remains dedicated to fostering transparency and accountability within its operations, striving to maintain the public’s trust and confidence.

Through thorough investigations and strict protocols, the Force is steadfast in the pursuit of truth and justice, while ensuring that its personnel who violate the law are held accountable for their actions.

The commitment is evident as the Nigeria Police Force continues to work tirelessly to uphold the rule of law and reinforce the integrity of policing
