Muslim Community Urged to Turn Out Peacefully as Court Decides on the Constitutional Rights of Muslim Schoolgirls

Oyo High Court to deliver judgment in landmark hijab case eyes will be on the High Court of Justice, Iyaganku, Ibadan, on Tuesday, 14th July 2026, as the court is set to deliver judgment in one of the most significant legal battles concerning religious freedom and the constitutional rights of Muslim students in Oyo State.

The judgment, scheduled for 9:00 a.m. at Court 17, will determine the outcome of Suit No. 47/2026, instituted by five Muslim schoolgirls, through their guardians, against the Oyo State Government and relevant education authorities.

The claimants approached the court to challenge what they contend is the denial of their constitutional right to wear the Islamic hijab with their school uniforms in certain government-owned schools historically associated with Christian missionary bodies in Oyo State.

The defendants in the suit are the Governor of Oyo State, the Commissioner for Education, Oyo State, the Attorney-General of Oyo State, and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Oyo State.

This case is not merely about a school uniform; it raises important constitutional questions regarding the protection of fundamental rights, freedom of religion, equality before the law, and the place of religious accommodation within public educational institutions.

As the court prepares to pronounce its judgment, members of the Muslim Ummah across Oyo State are respectfully encouraged to be present peacefully and lawfully to witness this historic judicial proceeding.
