Open Society on Justice Reform Project (OSJRP) has called upon the Senate leadership and the Inspector-General of Police to act decisively regarding the recent reported incident involving Federal Lawmaker Alex Ikwecheghi.

According to the Executive Director, Open Society on Justice Reform Project, Com. Samuel Akpologun, the allegation of Mr. Ikwecheghi physically assaulting an Uber driver, evidenced by video footage, represents a profound breach of public trust, an affront to justice, and a stark danger to the rule of law in Nigeria.

This incident, if confirmed, is a disturbing testament to the unchecked impunity that some individuals in authority continue to wield.

The OSJRP views such conduct as not only disgraceful but as an act that undermines core principles of our Constitution, which is anchored on respect for human rights and the dignity of all persons.

Section 34 of the Nigerian Constitution expressly guarantees the right to dignity of every citizen, prohibiting any form of degrading treatment.

Any action that contradicts this sacred guarantee, particularly by a public servant, strikes at the very heart of justice and mocks the foundations of our democratic governance.

This issue transcends the alleged physical assault itself.

It casts a shadow over the integrity of public institutions and erodes confidence in our legislative framework, sending a message of indifference and disregard for the rule of law.

OSJRP is deeply troubled that, if left unaddressed, such behavior could encourage further abuses by those entrusted with public power, thereby endangering our society’s commitment to justice and fairness.

As an organization committed to advocating for transparency, accountability, and the upholding of human rights (values that drive our work at the Open Society on Justice Reform Project), we are compelled to demand an immediate investigation and, if necessary, enforcement of disciplinary measures against Mr. Ikwecheghi.

OSJRP stands in resolute defense of justice and the rule of law, principles that we strive to uphold in all our initiatives and as articulated on our platform, osjreform.org.

OSJRP is therefore urging both the Senate leadership and the Inspector-General of Police to pursue this matter with utmost urgency.

By holding Mr. Ikwecheghi accountable, these authorities have the opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to the Nigerian Constitution, restore public confidence, and demonstrate that all citizens, regardless of status, are equal under the law.
