Miqati condemns attacks, urges APC, ADC supporters to embrace peace

African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Kaduna State, Shuaibu Idris Miqati, has appealed to supporters of the APC and ADC to shun violence and embrace peace, warning that escalating political tensions could threaten the stability of the state ahead of the 2027 elections.

Miqati, in a statement, said the incidents were unfortunate and capable of undermining peaceful political participation ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to him, a group of ADC supporters had planned a peaceful solidarity walk in support of a governorship aspirant but were allegedly met with force, resulting in injuries to some participants and a near breakdown of law and order.

He described the incident as “unwarranted, uncalled for and unfortunate,” stressing that such confrontations could have been avoided.

The ADC candidate also referred to another alleged incident involving supporters who had gathered to welcome Rt. Hon. Isa Ashiru Kudan, who had returned from the Lesser Hajj pilgrimage.

Miqati said some of the supporters were allegedly attacked, while vehicles belonging to participants reportedly had their windscreens and side-door glasses smashed.

The allegations come amid heightened political activities in Kaduna as parties and aspirants intensify preparations for the 2027 elections. Earlier in September, ADC supporters and security personnel also clashed during a solidarity walk in Kaduna, with competing accounts over the circumstances that led to the confrontation.

The police said their intervention followed alleged obstruction of a major road and disruption of public order, while ADC supporters alleged intimidation and excessive force.

Miqati called on political actors and their supporters to exercise restraint, warning that political violence could create opportunities for unemployed and aggrieved youths to exploit the situation and cause further havoc in communities.

He urged the Kaduna State Government, particularly Governor Uba Sani, to call on members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other political stakeholders to desist from acts that could escalate political tension.

“Many unemployed and angry youths could seize any opportunity to wreck havoc in our communities in the name of politics,” he said.

He also appealed to political groups to adopt proactive security measures by informing law enforcement agencies ahead of rallies, walks, receptions and other political activities in order to obtain appropriate security coverage.

According to him, the responsibility for maintaining peace should not rest entirely on security agencies, particularly at a time when they are already dealing with broader security challenges.

Miqati expressed sympathy with those who were allegedly injured or whose vehicles were damaged during the incidents.

He further announced a personal contribution of N500,000 to commence an appeal fund aimed at assisting victims with hospital bills and the repair of damaged vehicles.

“I personally sympathise with those who have been injured and/or have their vehicles destroyed in any form,” he said.

He appealed to supporters of all political parties to remain calm and pursue their political ambitions peacefully, noting that stakeholders may differ in their preferred policies and methods but share the objective of advancing Kaduna State.

Miqati urged political leaders to prioritise dialogue, peaceful participation and respect for the rights of citizens throughout the electoral process.

He concluded by calling on all stakeholders to work towards preserving peace and stability in Kaduna State and Nigeria.
