Labour Unions threaten action over workers’ plight at National Theatre

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to address the deplorable working conditions of staff at the National Theatre in Lagos.

According to the NLC Chairman, Lagos State, Comrade Funmi Agnes Sessi, the staff have been forced to operate in open-air conditions under trees, with no improvements made despite numerous correspondences and meetings.

The National Theatre staff have been battling poor working conditions for an extended period, with the NLC reminding the Federal Government of its earlier correspondence dated May 21, 2025.

The appointment of a new Board Chairman, Mr. Disun Holloway, was expected to address these issues, but his tenure has been marked by secrecy and exclusion of staff.

The NLC demanded that the Federal Government immediately return staff to the rehabilitated National Theatre and restore dignified working conditions, initiate open, inclusive stakeholder engagement regarding the use and administration of the National Theatre and ensure transparency in the management of the facility.

Protect all jobs and keep the commitment made by former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, assuring no job losses post-rehabilitation.

The NLC’s ultimatum highlights the need for the Federal Government to prioritize workers’ welfare and dignity.

The labour union’s resolve to defend the future of the National Theatre, a national symbol and taxpayer-funded monument, underscores the importance of preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage.
