Kidnapping in Cross River: Police engage Navy, Akwa Ibom Command for rescue operation

Cross River State Police Command has launched a rescue operation for 20 passengers, including comedian Odey Mathias, popularly known as General Odey, who were kidnapped by pirates along the Cross River waterways on Good Friday.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Cross River State, SP Ugbo Irene, the passengers were abducted while traveling on an Akwa-Cross Transport Company boat from Oron, Akwa Ibom State.

The Command clarifies that the incident was not reported to the Marine Police Department or any unit of the Cross River State Command at the time of occurrence, hindering immediate intervention.

According to preliminary intelligence, the incident took place along Calabar/Oron Waterways, opposite James Creek, making it challenging for the Command to independently verify or act promptly on the report.

Despite jurisdictional limitations, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olusegun Eyitayo Omosanyin, has directed the Marine Department to activate all necessary measures to locate and rescue the alleged victims.

The police command has engaged with the Nigerian Navy, specifically the NN Victory Naval Commodore, A. Oride, on deep-sea rescue operations, as it is suspected that the victims have been transported to a high-sea deep-water location.

The Navy commander is currently combing the area.

The Command reassures the public that the protection of lives and property remains its top priority and constitutional mandate.
