IDEAL-NIGERIA worries over current skyrocketing fuel pump price in major cities across Nigeria

Stanley Ihedigbo

Initiative For Ideal Development And Emancipatory Leadership In Nigeria (IDEAL-NIGERIA),  a human rights and good governance group has expressed worry over current skyrocketing fuel pump price in major cities across Nigeria.

In their New Year statement, made available to The Mirror, Executive Director of the group, Pastor Nwokocha Anozie Innocent, questioned the rationale behind the current skyrocketing pump price in major cities across Nigeria outside Abuja and Lagos,  the situation he lamented  has brought hardship to the citizens.

He  noted that  there was agreement between the NNPC Limited with NUPENG, IPMAN as well as other major stakeholders in the oil and gas sector spearheaded by the  Department of State Security (DSS) on December 8, 2022 which has among other major components of the truce, the demand by the independent marketers to henceforth make it key for them to lift petroleum products directly from the NNPC Limited and at the ex depot price even with the consistent promise of the NNPC Limited of the availability of petroleum products.

“This was endorsed with a caveat that failure on any of the independent marketers to play by the rules will lead to withdrawal of certificate.

“The question is, if they are lifting at ex depot price, why are they selling at a much higher price of over 100% increase to the general public particularly in locations outside Abuja the Federal Capital Territory ?

“Another question is, if they are lifting directly from NNPC Limited and no longer from other sources subject to the agreement reached with the DSS thereby boycotting the staggered incremental differentials from such development, why are they not selling to Nigerians at least at the approved government regulated price of #165 ?

“If the move by the DSS has succeeded in yielding much needed fruits cum results in Abuja within just a short period of time, thereby eliminating intoto the hydra headed artificial fuel scarcity, why are other States of the Federation left out of the equation or benefit of this DSS intervention ?”, he further said.

The group Executive Director asked  why is it that Nigerians are still experiencing high level of petroleum price increase even with the assurances from the NNPC Limited following the meeting with the DSS and other downstream oil stakeholders of the availability of the product ?

“Why is it that the Federal Competition And Consumer Protection Commission FCCPC, the ICPC, the Nigerian Midstream And Downstream Price be Regulators Authority (NMDPRA), the Standard Organization Of Nigeria (SON) have decided to be indifferent on this matter of national important with tendency to breach national security.

“We  further observed the following prevailing prices of pms in various States across Nigeria as at Monday, January 2, 2023: From record analysis obtained by the human rights and good governance group, the results depict thus:

“Abuja — #165, #179, #180 and #190,  Kogi — #180 and #195, Lagos — #169, #230 and #250, Kwara — #180 and above. Abia — #260, #280 and #330, Imo — #280, #310, #320 and #330,  Edo — #270 and #300, Rivers –#165, #250, #300 and #350, Enugu — #290, Anambra — #280, Delta — #250, #255, #260 and #280.

“Also Plateau — #300 and #320, Ebonyi — #270 and #300. Adamawa — #300, Sokoto — #300 and #305, Kano — #295, Ondo — #260 etc,” he explained.

According to him,  they  believe that government exist as an instrument or vehicle through which people’s interest wishes and aspirations in a political community are expressed and realized.

“However, with the present development, it is becoming increasingly obvious that the people are left at their own peril which in the first place necessitated the intervention of the DSS in the case of Abuja for the interest of national security in this all important matter considering the biting effect this is having on the masses at the moment,” he further lamented.
