Gov Eno approves maintenance of 83 roads in Uyo, orders full rehabilitation of Aka Itiam Road

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has approved the maintenance of 83 roads within the Uyo metropolis and ordered the full rehabilitation of Aka Itiam Road, as part of measures to improve urban infrastructure and ease movement within the state capital.

The approval followed briefings from the Ministry of Works during the ongoing ministerial briefings in Uyo.

Governor Eno directed that all failed portions of roads across the metropolis be fixed with immediate effect, stressing the need for speed and quality in execution.

According to the Governor, Amitec Construction and Development Limited has already been mobilised for the road maintenance works, with a clear directive that all identified failed sections must be repaired before the end of the dry season.

Some of the roads earmarked for maintenance include Oron Road by Udo Umana, Udo Eduok, Okon Essien, Plaza Bypass, Ikot Ekpene Road, Abak Road, Clement Isong Avenue, parts of Nsikak Eduok Avenue, and Port Harcourt Street.

Other roads listed for intervention are the Itam Junction Roundabout, parts of Obio Imo Street, D’Angelo Hotel Road, EFCC Road in Ewet Housing Estate, Johnson Street off Aka Road, Ekpenyong Street, and several other strategic inner-city roads.

Governor Eno also received briefings from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Health, during which he approved several social and sectoral interventions aimed at improving the welfare of Akwa Ibom residents.

In the humanitarian sector, the Governor approved the first-quarter distribution of food items to vulnerable citizens, directing that the exercise be carried out during the forthcoming Easter period to provide relief for indigent households.

For the education sector, Governor Eno approved the payment of first and second term subventions for public primary, secondary and technical colleges across the state.

He also okayed the payment of West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) and science practical fees for SS3 and ST3 students of Akwa Ibom State origin attending public schools.

Additionally, the Governor approved the procurement of school uniforms, socks, bags and shoes for pupils in model primary schools, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to inclusive and quality education.

Briefing the Governor, the Ministry of Health secured approval for all health-related 2025 counterpart funding, covering key areas such as health insurance, primary healthcare, and programmes on immunization, family planning and nutrition.

Governor Eno, who declared a state of emergency in the health sector in 2024, also approved the 2024 Medical Residency Training Fund, the revitalisation of the State Central Medical Stores, and the issuance of appointment letters to newly engaged contract health workers.

Commending the Ministry of Health for the reforms and milestones recorded in 2025, the Governor urged the ministry to sustain the momentum and deliver even better outcomes in 2026.

The approvals, according to observers, underscore Governor Eno’s people-centred governance approach, with renewed focus on infrastructure development, social welfare, education, and healthcare delivery across Akwa Ibom State.
