FENRAD blasts “Wicked” tax policy, urges government to suspend implementation

Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FENRAD) has strongly criticised the new tax policy introduced by the government of Nigeria, describing it as “wicked, exploitative and anti-people,” and warning that its implementation could worsen the economic hardship faced by citizens.

The civil society group is therefore calling on authorities to immediately suspend the policy and open wider consultations with stakeholders to review its potential social and economic impact.

According to the Executive Director, FENRAD, Comrade Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, at a time when the nation’s economy remains vulnerable, and citizens are confronted with rising inflation, unemployment, currency instability, and declining purchasing power, the imposition of additional tax burdens is deeply troubling.

These measures place disproportionate pressure on low- and middle-income earners, small and medium-sized enterprises, and already marginalized communities.

FENRAD viewed the new tax framework as exploitative, insensitive, and disconnected from the harsh economic realities facing ordinary Nigerians.

Rather than fostering economic recovery and inclusive growth, the policy risks widening inequality, escalating hardship, and undermining public confidence in governance.

As an environmental and social justice activist organization, FENRAD faulted the present administration for failing to prioritize people-centered economic reforms.

“Fiscal policy must serve as a tool for national development and social protection—not as an instrument that compounds the suffering of citizens during economic instability”, the group emphasized.

The Foundation emphasized that sustainable revenue generation cannot come at the expense of vulnerable populations.

“Instead, the government should focus on strengthening progressive taxation mechanisms that ensure high-income earners and large corporations meet their fair tax obligations.
Plugging revenue leakages and combating corruption within public financial management systems. Conducting a transparent economic and social impact assessment of the new tax measures.

“Engaging civil society organizations, labour groups, business associations, and community stakeholders in meaningful consultation before full implementation,” they stressed.

FENRAD further called on the National Assembly to exercise its constitutional oversight function by reviewing the policy to ensure alignment with principles of equity, fairness, and social justice.

“Economic reforms must be anchored in compassion, transparency, and inclusivity. Any policy that disproportionately affects the poor and vulnerable undermines national cohesion and long-term development objectives,” they further stressed.

FENRAD reaffirmed its unwavering commitment as a civil society and activist organization to advocate for economic justice, environmental sustainability, and accountable governance.

The Foundation remained prepared to engage constructively with policymakers and stakeholders in advancing equitable reforms that protect the dignity and welfare of the Nigerian people.
