Ebie: Leader who saw a lawyer in a lift operator

The Call to Bar ceremony of Jim Beabubari Marshall on Tuesday, July 6, 2026, in Abuja was more than a celebration of one man’s academic achievement. It was a powerful reminder that when leadership is driven by empathy rather than privilege, ordinary encounters can become extraordinary, life-changing moments.

Jim Beabubari Marshall, an indigene of Bayelsa State, had worked for over a decade as a contract lift operator with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). Unknown to many who rode the elevator each day, Jim carried within him a dream that stretched far beyond operating lifts.

Through years of sacrifice, determination, and self-belief, he sponsored himself through the Faculty of Law at Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, earning a Bachelor of Laws degree against overwhelming odds.

Yet, as is often the case with many brilliant Nigerians, financial hardship threatened to extinguish that dream. Unable to afford the cost of attending the Nigerian Law School, his aspirations appeared destined to remain unfulfilled.

Then came a defining moment: In 2024, Mr. Chiedu Ebie, Chairman, Governing Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), on his way to a board meeting, engaged Mr. Jim in what many would have considered an ordinary conversation inside the lift. But humility has a remarkable way of seeing people beyond their uniforms and job descriptions.

Rather than treating Jim as merely the operator of an elevator, Mr. Ebie saw a human being with dreams, struggles, and untapped potential.

That brief conversation revealed Jim’s remarkable journey and the painful reality that financial constraints had halted his pursuit of becoming a lawyer.

For many, the conversation might have ended with words of encouragement. For Mr. Ebie, however, leadership demanded action.

Recognising the significance of Jim’s story, he immediately mobilised support. Working alongside former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Augustine Alegeh, SAN, the necessary interventions were made to secure Jim’s admission into the Port Harcourt Campus of the Nigerian Law School. More importantly, the financial support required for registration and other essential obligations was provided, removing the barriers that had stood between Jim and his lifelong dream.

The result speaks louder than any commendation.

On April 18, 2026, Jim informed Mr. Ebie that he had successfully passed the Bar Final Examinations. Today, he proudly stands among the newest Barristers and Solicitors of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. Even more symbolic is his transition from contract lift operator to a full-time legal practitioner – a transformation that perfectly captures the power of compassionate leadership.

Stories such as this are not accidental. They are reflections of a leadership philosophy deeply rooted in service to humanity.

Throughout his public service, Mr. Chiedu Ebie has consistently demonstrated that leadership is measured not merely by policies formulated or projects executed but by the lives positively impacted. His approach reflects the timeless principle that true greatness lies in lifting others.
