CICAN Polls: New Telegraph’s Hassan takes chairmanship, Mirror Newspaper publisher clinches vice chair

Commerce and Industry Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CICAN) has elected a new executive council to pilot the affairs of the association for the next three years, with Comrade Taiwo Hassan of New Telegraph emerging as Chairman and The Mirror Newspaper publisher clinching the Vice Chairmanship position.

The keenly contested election was held on Thursday at the NACCIMA House, Lagos, and attracted wide participation from members of the association.

Announcing the results, the Chairman of the three-member Electoral Committee, Comrade Haruna Jimoh of MITV, declared that Comrade Hassan met all constitutional and electoral requirements and was duly elected as Chairman of CICAN.

Other members of the newly elected executive council include Comrade Rev
Stanley Ihedigbo of The Mirror Newspaper as Vice Chairman; Comrade Olufemi Orioye of OGBC as Secretary General; Mrs. Funmi Adeoye of FRCN as Assistant Secretary; Mrs. Merit Ibe of The Sun Newspaper as Treasurer; and Mr. Canice Opara of DispatchNewsOnline as Financial Secretary.

Comrade Haruna Jimoh described the election as free, fair, and credible, commending members for their discipline, maturity, and adherence to the association’s guidelines throughout the process.

He urged the new leadership to remain faithful to their campaign promises and work towards strengthening the association’s relevance and visibility within the media and business community.

In his acceptance speech, the newly elected Chairman, Comrade Taiwo Hassan, expressed profound gratitude to members for the confidence reposed in him.

He pledged to lead the association with transparency, accountability, and justice, assuring members of an inclusive administration.

Comrade Hassan emphasized that the new executive would prioritize members’ welfare through proactive policies, regular capacity-building programmes, and stronger engagement with key stakeholders in the commerce and industry sectors.

He further reaffirmed CICAN’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s economic aspirations, particularly the national goal of attaining a $1 trillion economy, noting that economic journalism plays a critical role in shaping public discourse and policy direction.

Members of the Electoral Committee included Comrade Ayanfeoluwa Providence, who served as Secretary, and Comrade David Oladimeji of BusinessNews.com as a member.
