Abia ADC disowns April congresses, urges members to remain calm

Abia State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has distanced itself from reports of planned ward, local government, and state congresses scheduled to hold between April 7 and April 14, 2026.

In a statement issued by the State Chairman, Hon. Don Norman Obinna, the party clarified that it is not organising or participating in any such congresses within the state during the stated period.

The party leadership formally notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), party stakeholders, and the general public of its position, urging members across wards and local government areas to disregard any contrary information suggesting that congresses would be held.

According to the statement, the decision is anchored on a recent ruling by the Appeal Court, which upheld the “status quo ante bellum,” effectively maintaining the existing party structure. The ruling also prompted INEC to remove the Senator David Mark-led National Working Committee (NWC) from its official website and instruct its state offices not to supervise the proposed ADC congresses and national convention.
Consequently, the current tenure of ward, local government, and state executives in Abia remains valid and unaffected by any purported arrangements for fresh congresses.

The party leadership called on members, leaders, and stakeholders to remain calm, law-abiding, and committed to the ideals of the party. It also cautioned against actions capable of disrupting peace and stability within their communities.
While acknowledging the ongoing internal challenges, the Abia ADC expressed optimism about efforts being made to reposition and revitalise the party. It assured members that steps are being taken to restore order and strengthen the party’s structures.

“Further updates will be communicated as progress is made,” the statement added, while appreciating members for their continued support and loyalty during the period.

The development underscores the lingering leadership tussle within the party at the national level, which continues to have ripple effects across state chapters.
