114 years on, civil service union honours Tinubu with shield award

Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU) has conferred its prestigious Shield Award on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in recognition of his commitment to the welfare of Nigerian workers.

The award was presented on Monday, September 28, 2026, as part of activities marking the union’s 114th anniversary at Merit House, Abuja.

The honour, described by the union as its highest award, is reserved for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service and commitment to the advancement and welfare of Nigerian workers.

President Tinubu’s award was received on his behalf by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Olorogun Festus Keyamo, SAN.

Presenting the award, NCSU National President, Comrade Oluwole Sunday, described President Tinubu as a “true shield of the Nigerian worker,” citing what the union described as his administration’s policies and interventions aimed at improving workers’ welfare.

Sunday said the President’s interventions had helped raise morale within the civil service and demonstrated concern for the well-being of workers across the country.

The award was presented by the leadership of the union, including its National President, Comrade Oluwole Sunday; immediate past President and Chairman of the Occasion, Comrade Lawrence Ameachi; Chairman of the Federal Council, Comrade Adoga Gupada; and Assistant General Secretary, Comrade Yildet Bigwan.

Keyamo, who received the award on behalf of the President, expressed appreciation to the union for the recognition, describing the NCSU as the oldest trade union in Nigeria.

The minister, who was also recognised by the union for his solidarity with Nigerian workers, used the occasion to highlight what he described as President Tinubu’s commitment to improving the welfare of the Nigerian workforce.

The union said it currently has 84 affiliates and has a history spanning more than a century, predating Nigeria’s independence.

It also noted its historical role in defending the interests of Nigerian workers during the colonial era.

Following the presentation, the award was displayed by Keyamo in his office alongside members of the NCSU leadership.

The anniversary event brought together union leaders and stakeholders to commemorate the long-standing history of the civil service labour movement in Nigeria.
