Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), the flagship banking subsidiary of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO), has been named the Best Overall Performing Bank in Nigeria in The Banker magazine’s Top 1000 World Banks Rankings 2026, further reinforcing its position as one of the country’s leading financial institutions.

The prestigious recognition, announced on July 14, 2026, highlights GTBank’s outstanding financial performance, operational efficiency, resilience and sustainable growth in an increasingly competitive banking landscape.

The Banker magazine’s annual Top 1000 World Banks Rankings is regarded as one of the most authoritative assessments of the global banking industry.

The rankings are based on audited financial statements and evaluate financial institutions using key performance indicators including financial strength, operational efficiency, risk management, liquidity, growth, leverage, profitability and overall soundness.

According to the 2026 rankings, GTBank emerged first overall among Nigerian banks and also secured the number one position in Efficiency and Soundness. The bank additionally ranked second in Return on Risk, Liquidity, Growth, Leverage and Profitability, demonstrating consistently strong performance across virtually every major banking indicator.

The achievement underscores GTBank’s continued ability to maintain robust financial fundamentals while adapting to changing market realities through innovation, prudent risk management and customer-focused service delivery.

Reacting to the recognition, the Managing Director of Guaranty Trust Bank Ltd, Mrs. Miriam Olusanya, described the award as a testament to the dedication of the bank’s workforce, the confidence of its customers and the strategic advantages of operating within the GTCO Group.

She said the recognition was particularly significant because it reflected the institution’s disciplined approach to banking and its commitment to delivering value to stakeholders.

According to her, “Being named the Best Overall Performing Bank in Nigeria by The Banker is a recognition that means a great deal to us, not just because of the prestige of the publication, but because of what it represents—the hard work of our people, the loyalty of our customers, and the strength we continue to draw from being part of the Group.

“Ranking first in Overall Performance, Efficiency and Soundness reflects our disciplined approach to banking, the synergies we harness across the GTCO Group and our relentless focus on delivering real value. We do not take this recognition for granted. It deepens our resolve to keep raising the bar, to serve our customers better every day, and to remain a bank that consistently delivers value to all its stakeholders, and to the GTCO Group we are proud to belong.”

Industry analysts say the latest ranking further strengthens GTBank’s reputation as one of Africa’s most successful banking institutions, with a proven record of financial stability, operational excellence and innovation.

The recognition also adds to the bank’s growing list of international awards and accolades earned over the years for excellence in corporate governance, customer service, digital banking and financial performance.

Observers note that GTBank’s sustained investment in technology, digital transformation and customer experience has continued to position the bank as a market leader, enabling it to remain competitive while delivering innovative financial products and services to individuals, businesses and corporate organisations.

The latest achievement is also seen as a reflection of the strength of the GTCO business model, which combines disciplined execution with strategic diversification across banking and non-banking financial services.

GTCO Plc operates across several African countries and the United Kingdom, offering a broad range of financial solutions spanning commercial banking, payment services, asset and funds management, pension fund administration and other financial services.

The Group has built a strong reputation for sound corporate governance, innovation and customer-centric service delivery, while remaining committed to creating long-term value for shareholders, customers and the communities where it operates.

With its latest recognition by The Banker, GTBank has once again affirmed its status as one of Nigeria’s most resilient and consistently high-performing financial institutions, setting a benchmark for excellence within the country’s banking industry and across the African financial sector.
