Alia commends GSS Gboko team, pledges greater investment in sports

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has congratulated the female basketball team of Government Secondary School (GSS), Gboko, following their impressive victory at the 26th edition of the Nestlé Milo Secondary Schools Basketball Championship held in Lagos.

The GSS Gboko girls, who represented Benue State at the national finals, emerged champions after an outstanding unbeaten run throughout the competition, winning all five of their matches to claim the coveted national title and return home with the championship trophy.

Governor Alia expressed delight over the team’s remarkable achievement, describing the victory as a source of pride for Benue State and a testament to the immense sporting talents within the state.

According to a statement issued on Sunday in Makurdi by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, the governor closely followed the team’s progress throughout the tournament and, upon their triumph, directed state officials to receive the victorious players in Abuja to ensure their welfare and safe return to Benue.

The governor commended the players for their discipline, determination and exceptional display of skill, while also praising the coaching crew for guiding the team to national glory.

He announced that the state government has prepared a special reward package for the players and their coaches in recognition of their outstanding performance and for bringing honour to Benue State.

Governor Alia reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sports development, stressing that investments in youth and sporting activities remain a priority.

“My administration shall continue to support sporting activities to expose and nurture the abundant talents among our youth,” the governor stated.

He noted that the success of the GSS Gboko basketball team serves as an inspiration to young people across the state, urging other students and athletes to remain committed to excellence, discipline and hard work.

The governor expressed confidence that with sustained government support, Benue State would continue to produce athletes capable of excelling at national and international competitions.
