5th Cycling Lagos opens online registration ahead of September 12 grand finale

Organisers of the 5th edition of Cycling Lagos have officially opened the online registration portal for cyclists interested in participating in this year’s flagship cycling event, with the grand finale scheduled to hold on Saturday, September 12, 2026, from the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

The organisers announced that registration, which commenced on July 1, 2026, will remain open until August 26, 2026, giving cyclists from across Nigeria and beyond ample time to secure their participation in what has become one of Africa’s biggest cycling festivals.

Speaking during the announcement in Lagos, Convener of Cycling Lagos and Managing Director of BrandEscort Communications, Bamidele Adeleye, encouraged both professional and recreational cyclists to register early through the official event portal.

He said prospective participants could complete their registration by scanning the QR code on the event flyer or by visiting the official Cycling Lagos website.

According to Adeleye, the online registration process was introduced to ensure convenience for participants while enhancing planning, accreditation and logistics for the event.

“The registration process has been designed to make participation seamless, enabling riders to register conveniently from anywhere while ensuring efficient planning, accreditation and event logistics,” he stated.

He disclosed that this year’s event would feature multiple categories designed to accommodate cyclists of different skill levels and age groups.

These include professional cyclists, amateur riders, children, celebrities and recreational cyclists, all aimed at encouraging broader participation while promoting healthy living and active mobility.

Adeleye explained that beyond the sporting competition, Cycling Lagos has continued to champion environmental sustainability, road safety, youth engagement and sports tourism.

Speaking on the theme for the 2026 edition, “Trash to Treasure,” he said the event would promote conversations around converting waste into valuable resources, transforming challenges into opportunities and encouraging environmental responsibility.

According to him, the theme also reflects the remarkable journey of Cycling Lagos itself, which started in 2018 with modest public interest but has evolved into one of Nigeria’s most recognised cycling events and a model for similar initiatives across Africa.

“Today, Cycling Lagos has become a reference point for cycling events, demonstrating how one powerful idea can transform communities, inspire healthier lifestyles and encourage environmental consciousness,” Adeleye said.

Reflecting on the growth of cycling in Nigeria, he noted that the sport has witnessed tremendous progress since the event was launched.

“When we started this event in 2018, there were very few major cycling events in Nigeria, and cycling culture was relatively low. Through consistent advocacy over the years, the story has changed significantly. More people are embracing cycling, and more events are springing up across the country,” he added.

Adeleye also highlighted the success of Cycling Kano, organised in partnership with the Kano State Government in 2025, describing it as the first major cycling event of its kind in Northern Nigeria and a testament to the expanding influence of the Cycling Lagos initiative.

He said the annual event has continued to attract thousands of participants and spectators over the past four editions, further positioning Lagos as a leading destination for sports tourism in Africa.

The Cycling Lagos Convener called on corporate organisations, government agencies, development partners, cycling enthusiasts and members of the public to support and participate in this year’s edition, noting that the event remains committed to promoting healthy lifestyles, environmental sustainability, youth development and safer urban mobility through cycling.
