Support Tinubu to overcome insecurity, Gowon tells Nigerians at Benue jubilee

Former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, has praised the remarkable development recorded by Benue State over the past five decades, describing the state as a critical pillar in Nigeria’s nation-building efforts.

Gowon made the remarks while serving as the Special Guest of Honour at the Benue @ 50 Jubilee Celebration held at the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) Square in Makurdi.

The elder statesman commended the government and people of Benue State for their achievements in agriculture, military service and other sectors of national development, noting that the state’s contributions to Nigeria remain significant and worthy of celebration.

Reflecting on Benue’s history, Gowon paid glowing tribute to the late Joseph Akahan, recalling his dedication and sacrifice during the Nigerian Civil War. He recounted that Akahan successfully delivered a crucial military directive to the Brigade Commander in Makurdi before tragically losing his life in a helicopter crash on his return journey.

According to Gowon, Benue has continued to produce outstanding individuals who have distinguished themselves in various fields, contributing immensely to the country’s progress.

He also called on the people of the state to remain united, embrace fairness and continue working together to sustain the peace and development that have characterised Benue over the years.

The former military ruler further paid tribute to the late Joseph Sarwuan Tarka, describing him as a courageous advocate for minority rights whose leadership helped shape Nigeria’s political evolution.

He also remembered the late Solomon Lar for joining forces with Tarka in championing the cause of minority groups across the country.

Speaking on national issues, Gowon urged Nigerians to rally behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stressing that the administration requires the collective support of citizens to effectively address the country’s security challenges.

He maintained that overcoming insecurity demands national unity, cooperation and sustained commitment from all Nigerians, regardless of political or ethnic differences.

Recalling the creation of Benue State, Gowon explained that the process began during his administration in 1975 before the state was formally created in 1976 under the regime of the late General Murtala Mohammed.

He expressed satisfaction with the developmental strides recorded by the administration of Governor Hyacinth Alia, while acknowledging the contributions of previous leaders whose efforts have collectively advanced the state’s growth.

Gowon concluded by encouraging the government and people of Benue State to build on their achievements and remain committed to pursuing greater progress in the years ahead, expressing confidence that the state would continue to play a leading role in Nigeria’s development.
