Transformation King sets new benchmark with 120-hour barbering marathon

Excitement and celebration filled the atmosphere at Iyano-Era in Lagos on Monday as 24-year-old barber and hair stylist, Ikechukwu Damilola, popularly known as “Transformation King,” successfully completed a 120-hour barbering and hairdressing marathon in a bid to set a new Guinness World Record.

Damilola reached the 120-hour milestone at exactly 6:09 p.m., surpassing the previous 75-hour record held by Joshua Babatunde Aiyenuro, popularly known as T-Jos Signature.

The five-day endurance challenge, which commenced on June 10 and ended on June 15, took place at Unique Bar and Lounge in the Iyano-Era area of Lagos, within the Otto-Awori Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

The marathon attracted widespread attention from residents, youth groups, beauty industry stakeholders and corporate supporters, with hundreds of spectators gathering daily to witness the remarkable feat.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Damilola provided free haircuts and hairstyling services to more than 200 beneficiaries throughout the marathon, including women who received complimentary hair styling.

The event, supported by the Otto-Awori LCDA, was monitored by officials overseeing compliance with Guinness World Records guidelines for validation.

With the successful completion of the challenge, Damilola is expected to be recognised as the holder of the Guinness World Record for the longest barbering and hairdressing marathon, subject to official confirmation by Guinness World Records.

Speaking shortly after crossing the 120-hour mark, an emotional and excited Damilola described the achievement as the fulfilment of a lifelong dream.

According to him, the feat would not have been possible without the support and encouragement of family members, friends, supporters and the chairman of the local council.

“This is one of the greatest moments of my life. What started as a dream has become a reality today.

“The idea would have remained a dream if not for the encouragement and support I received from friends, family members and the chairman of the council.

“My passion for hairdressing started in 2006, and since then I have dedicated myself to the profession, teaching the skill in various schools and mentoring young people,” he said.

Damilola noted that his determination stemmed from his belief that skills and talents could create wealth and opportunities for young people.

“I am driven by the belief that wealth and opportunity can also come from skills and talent.

“Another source of my inspiration after God is the desire to make people look good because looking good is good business,” he added.

Chairman of Otto-Awori LCDA, Hon. Kareem Azeez Abiodun, one of the major sponsors of the event, commended Damilola for his resilience, commitment and determination.

Abiodun described the young barber as a shining example of the immense potential that exists among Nigerian youths when given the right support and opportunities.

“Damilola has remained focused on finishing strong, and today we celebrate his determination and courage to make a difference.

“He is a good example of a worthy young man whose dedication can positively impact society.

“Our administration remains committed to youth empowerment through skills acquisition, innovation and entrepreneurship.

“We will continue to support young people with great ideas and ambitions because they represent the future of our communities,” he said.

The council chairman stressed that sustained investment in youth development remained one of the most effective strategies for tackling unemployment and social challenges.

He urged young Nigerians to emulate Damilola’s perseverance, discipline and commitment to excellence.

Among dignitaries who attended the event were the Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr Mobolaji Ogunlende; the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr Tolani Sule; and the member representing Ojo Constituency II in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Surajudeen Tijani.

Also present was a delegation representing Mr Bolaji Kayode Robert, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the House of Representatives in Ojo Federal Constituency.

Speaking on behalf of the team, Mr Gabriel Sunday said the presence of government officials and political leaders underscored the state’s commitment to supporting youth talent development and entrepreneurship.

According to him, initiatives such as Damilola’s record attempt demonstrate the importance of encouraging creativity, innovation and vocational skills among young Nigerians.

As music blared and supporters celebrated the historic accomplishment, many spectators described the feat as a source of inspiration for youths seeking alternative pathways to success through skills acquisition and entrepreneurship.

For Damilola, the 120-hour marathon represents not only a personal triumph but also a powerful message that determination, hard work and talent can transform dreams into reality.
