Academic excellence soars as NWUS secures full accreditation for most courses

Northwest University, Sokoto (NWUS) has recorded a major academic breakthrough, securing full accreditation for the majority of its programmes following a comprehensive evaluation by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Vice-Chancellor, Mukhtar Umar Bunza, announced on Tuesday during a press conference held at the university’s Senate Chambers, describing the achievement as a defining moment in the institution’s growth and academic journey.

He said the accreditation exercise, conducted in the last quarter of 2025, culminated in the award of full, five-year accreditation status to most of the programmes presented by the university.

According to him, the milestone reflects the collective commitment, resilience, and hard work of staff and students, as well as the strategic leadership of the university’s Governing Council and Founder/Pro-Chancellor, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko.

“This achievement is a testament to our unwavering dedication to academic excellence and quality assurance,” Bunza stated. “It underscores our resolve to position NWUS as a centre of excellence not only in Nigeria but globally.”

Details of the NUC assessment show that several faculties recorded impressive outcomes, with full accreditation secured across critical disciplines.

In the Computing and Science cluster, all four programmes presented—Computer Science, Cyber Security, Information Technology, and Software Engineering—received full accreditation, marking a significant endorsement of the university’s investment in technology-driven education.

Similarly, in the Social and Management Sciences, Accounting and Public Administration programmes were granted full accreditation, while Business Administration received interim accreditation status.

Within the Faculty of Education, both Special Education and Library and Information Science programmes secured full accreditation, reinforcing the institution’s role in teacher training and educational development.

The General Social Sciences programmes—Economics, Psychology, and Sociology—also earned full accreditation, further strengthening the university’s academic portfolio.

Commenting on the interim status granted to Business Administration, the Vice-Chancellor described it as an opportunity for further growth rather than a setback.

He noted that the feedback from the NUC provides a clear framework for improvements, adding that the university has already begun addressing the identified gaps ahead of the next accreditation cycle.

“We see this as a guide to do even better. Our faculty is fully committed to ensuring the programme attains full accreditation in the next review,” he said.

Commitment to continuous growth
Bunza also commended the leadership of the NUC, led by Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, for what he described as a transparent, thorough, and professional accreditation process.

He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to sustained investment in infrastructure, staff development, and academic innovation as part of its long-term vision.

As NWUS continues to expand its academic frontiers, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized that the institution remains focused on its mission of building “a home of knowledge that speaks to the world.”

The accreditation success is widely seen as a major boost to the university’s reputation and a signal of its readiness to compete among Nigeria’s leading higher institutions.
