NUMTEN raises alarm over presumptive tax, urges traders to report harassment

National Union of Market Traders Employers of Nigeria (NUMTEN) has issued an urgent notice to traders across the country, raising concerns over the implementation of the presumptive tax policy affecting the informal sector.

The union, an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), said it has received multiple reports of irregularities in tax assessments, including cases of harassment, arbitrary charges, and demand notices that do not align with agreed rates.

In a statement made available to traders, NUMTEN reaffirmed its commitment to protecting members from what it described as unfair and potentially illegal taxation practices.

The union emphasized that while taxation remains a legitimate obligation, it must be carried out transparently and in accordance with established guidelines.

“As a body representing the interests of market traders nationwide, we will not stand by while our members are subjected to exploitation under the guise of tax enforcement,” the statement read.

NUMTEN therefore called on traders who have experienced improper tax assessments or harassment by officials to promptly report such incidents to the union for immediate intervention.

Affected traders are advised to provide key details when making complaints, including their market name, Local Government Area (LGA), state, section, and any available information about the tax officers or demand notices involved.

The union also urged traders to share the information widely within their communities to ensure that no one is left vulnerable to unfair practices.

Reaffirming its resolve, NUMTEN stated that collective action remains essential in safeguarding the rights and livelihoods of market traders.

“Together, we can secure a fair and just trading environment for all,” the union concluded.
