Archibong applauds development drive of Umo Bassey Eno, calls for productive opposition

Strategy Director of Chastest Consult and a respected voice in media management, public affairs, and strategic communications, Ini Archibong, has called on stakeholders in Akwa Ibom State to adopt constructive engagement in their interactions with the administration of Governor Umo Bassey Eno.

Archibong made the call while speaking with journalists after a consultative meeting in Abuja, where he emphasized that meaningful dialogue, rather than political hostility, remains essential for the sustained development of the state.

According to him, while the administration of Governor Eno has recorded notable achievements, the future of Akwa Ibom depends on a citizenry that is both supportive and responsibly critical.

“Akwa Ibom belongs to all of us — it is not the exclusive property of any individual, party, or administration,” Archibong said. “Every stakeholder, whether within the APC, the opposition, civil society, or the diaspora, has both the right and responsibility to contribute to conversations about the state’s future.”

He stressed that such conversations must be grounded in facts and driven by genuine concern for the welfare of the people rather than political grandstanding.

Archibong also cautioned against what he described as “voices of distraction,” noting that criticism aimed solely at scoring political points does little to advance governance or development.

“There is a difference between constructive opposition and destructive opposition,” he said. “No governor knows it all. Even Governor Eno will benefit from a robust and engaged opposition that challenges him with ideas, holds him accountable with evidence, and offers alternatives where necessary. That kind of opposition strengthens governance.”

He warned that constant criticism without substance only creates unnecessary noise and distracts from meaningful progress.

Archibong, however, expressed admiration for the development strides recorded under the present administration, noting that the scale and quality of projects across the state are comparable to those in more developed economies.

“I have travelled extensively across the world, and I can confidently say that what is happening in Akwa Ibom today reflects a forward-thinking development agenda,” he said.

“Governor Eno has brought stability and renewed purpose to the state while positioning it as a destination hub in the South-South.”

He pointed to several ongoing initiatives under the administration, including investments in educational infrastructure, the Ibom Model Farms initiative, the construction of a new jetty in Oron, shoreline protection projects, and the development of warehouses and cold storage facilities aimed at supporting fishing communities and boosting trade.

Other projects highlighted by Archibong include the upgrade of the Akwa Ibom International Airport ahead of the planned commencement of international flights in April 2026, extensive road construction programmes across the state, and the development of the ARISE Palm Resort, which is projected to generate more than N20 billion annually when fully operational.

He also referenced the recently commissioned Senior Citizens Centre by the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, as well as the ongoing development of new urban settlements across the state.

“These are not just projects; they are foundations for long-term economic growth,” Archibong noted. “My support for this administration is rooted in the desire to see these foundations translate into a globally competitive state that attracts foreign direct investment and encourages members of the diaspora to return home and invest.”

Despite his support, Archibong maintained that his position should not be mistaken for unconditional endorsement, stressing that constructive feedback remains a crucial component of good governance.

“I am not here to be a cheerleader,” he said. “I am here as a stakeholder who wants results. Where the Governor gets it right, I will acknowledge it. Where there is room for improvement, I will say so through the appropriate channels and with the right intentions.”

Archibong also commended the appointment of Raymond Abia as Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Inter-Governmental Affairs, describing the decision as strategic and well thought out.

According to him, Abia’s experience in both the public and private sectors, particularly in the oil and gas industry, alongside his international networks, positions him well to effectively manage relationships between the state government and other institutions.

“Raymond Abia has served creditably in different capacities, and his ability to build relationships makes him particularly suited for this role,” Archibong said. “He will have my full support.”

The remarks come in the wake of a recent meeting of the Arise with Renewed Hope Initiative’s Federal Capital Territory chapter, where advisory and sub-committee members were inaugurated with a mandate to mobilise support ahead of the APC National Congress and work towards the re-election of President Bola Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Governor Eno.

Archibong concluded by urging all stakeholders to prioritise the collective interest of Akwa Ibom above partisan considerations, insisting that constructive dialogue and collaboration remain the most effective pathways to sustainable development in the state.
