Media plays crucial role in promoting criminal justice reforms, says CLEEN Foundation

One of the leading Civil Societies in Nigeria, CLEEN Foundation has emphasized the media’s critical role in promoting criminal justice reforms in Nigeria.

According to the foundation, the media’s advocacy efforts can significantly impact the effective implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) across the country.

Speaking at media advocacy for increased budgetary allocation for efficient implementation of ACJL regime organised by the centre in Lagos, aimed to promote effective implementation of ACJL in Nigeria, with a focus on citizen perspectives and policing reforms, Ag. Executive Director of the foundation, Mr. Peter Maduoma further emphasized the importance of the media in disseminating information to the public.

He stated that the CLEEN Foundation organizes events like this to collaborate with the press and keep vital information flowing.

He also highlighted the media’s role as a good pillar for the foundation and expressed his desire to improve their relationship.

Maduoma stressed the need to separate the powers of the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, as they are two different entities that can exploit and manipulate the law if not separated.

He also stated that the government doesn’t focus enough on security and justice in the country.

In his paper presentation, Programme Director of the foundation, Mr. Salaudeen Hashim, explained the citizens’ perspectives on policing reforms and the role of the media in advancing the law.

He further explained that ACJL is crucial in noticing the faults of the criminal justice system in Nigeria and guaranteeing witness protection and impartiality.

Hashim urged the press to consistently meet to raise awareness and correct faults in the criminal justice system.

In her digging deep into the findings, the Head of Lagos, CLEEN Foundation, Mrs. Blessing Abiri, encouraged the media to advocate for the mass involvement of citizens.

CLEEN Foundation’s advocacy efforts focus on, advocating for increased budgetary allocation to ACJL implementation, ensuring effective monitoring and oversight of ACJL implementation, engaging citizens in the advocacy process to promote transparency and accountability and using strategic advocacy and communication as tools for policy formulation and change.
