CHRICED condemns recall efforts against Senator Natasha, citing political persecution

Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has expressed deep concern over the recent developments related to the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from the Senate and the ensuing efforts to recall her as the elected representative of Kogi Central Constituency.

According to the Executive Director CHRICED, Comrade Ibrahim Zikirullahi the recall process is a clear example of political persecution, aimed at silencing Senator Natasha’s vocal criticism of corrupt practices and powerful political figures.

Senator Natasha has faced numerous challenges since her election, including vilification, assault, and violation, primarily due to her gender and membership in the opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Despite these obstacles, she has remained outspoken and courageous, refusing to back down in the face of adversity.

The recall process, which is being orchestrated by the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) government in Kogi State, has raised significant concerns about the involvement of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

CHRICED has accused INEC of yielding to political pressures and compromising its impartiality.

According to Section 69 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a senator can only be recalled under specific circumstances, including a petition signed by more than half of the registered voters in the senator’s constituency.

However, CHRICED has raised concerns about the legitimacy of the recall petition, citing reports that many constituents were deceived into signing the petition under pretenses.

CHRICED has called on INEC to prioritize democratic principles and the rule of law by conducting a comprehensive review of the recall petition.

The organization has also urged INEC to resist any attempts at manipulation by politicians aiming to suppress a vocal senator.

In addition to addressing the recall process, CHRICED has reiterated its demand for Senate President Godswill Akpabio to step down while an independent entity carries out a thorough and unbiased investigation into the sexual harassment allegations made against him.
