Zenith Bank widens lead as Nigeria’s Best-in-Class lender with record profit, Pan-African expansion

Zenith Bank Plc is consolidating its reputation as Nigeria’s best-performing lender following a remarkable first quarter of 2026 that combined impressive financial results with significant international recognition and continental expansion.

The bank, which recently emerged as both Africa’s Best Bank and Nigeria’s Best Bank at the prestigious Euromoney Awards for Excellence 2026, has continued to demonstrate why it remains one of Africa’s most respected financial institutions.

According to its unaudited financial statements for the three months ended March 31, 2026, Zenith Bank recorded a Group Profit Before Tax of ₦361 billion, representing a three per cent increase compared to the corresponding period in 2025. The performance makes it the highest pre-tax profit among Nigeria’s leading Tier-1 banks during the period.

The impressive earnings were supported by strong growth across key performance indicators. Gross earnings rose by 6.1 per cent to ₦1.01 trillion, while net interest income climbed 7.3 per cent to ₦634.1 billion, reflecting the bank’s ability to generate stronger income from its lending and investment activities.

One of the most notable highlights was the remarkable growth in non-interest revenue. Net fee and commission income surged by 44.6 per cent to ₦81 billion, underscoring Zenith Bank’s growing strength in digital banking, transaction services and payment solutions.

The bank also maintained a solid balance sheet, closing the first quarter with total assets of ₦32.01 trillion, while customer deposits increased to ₦24.47 trillion, demonstrating sustained customer confidence.

Shareholders’ funds rose by 16.3 per cent to ₦5.17 trillion, reflecting consistent earnings retention and stronger capital accumulation.

Analysts say the combination of expanding capital and profitability places Zenith Bank in a stronger position than many of its competitors, enabling it to support future growth without placing undue pressure on its balance sheet.
Zenith Bank’s lending activities also continued to expand.

Gross loans and advances increased by 8.6 per cent year-on-year to ₦12.04 trillion, while net loans rose by 13.2 per cent to ₦11.38 trillion.

Importantly, this expansion did not come at the expense of asset quality.
The bank’s non-performing loan ratio remained at 3.79 per cent, improving from 4.70 per cent recorded at the end of 2024, reflecting stronger credit risk management and disciplined lending practices.

Independent assessments also indicate that Zenith Bank maintained a loan-loss coverage ratio of 172.6 per cent, providing a significant cushion against potential credit losses.

Industry observers note that growing the loan portfolio while simultaneously reducing bad loans remains one of the strongest indicators of prudent banking operations.

The bank also continued to reward shareholders handsomely.
Following its record performance in 2025, Zenith Bank doubled its total dividend to ₦10 per share, distributing approximately ₦410.7 billion, one of the largest dividend payments ever made by a Nigerian company.

Its profitability ratios equally remained among the strongest in the industry, with Return on Average Equity standing at 23.2 per cent and Return on Average Assets at 3.4 per cent, highlighting efficient utilisation of shareholders’ funds.

Zenith Bank’s financial strength has also been recognised by international rating agencies.

Its Capital Adequacy Ratio stood at approximately 25 per cent, comfortably above the regulatory minimum prescribed by the Central Bank of Nigeria for systemically important banks.

Fitch Ratings similarly assessed the bank’s capital position as robust, while CardinalStone Research projects further improvements in capital adequacy over the next two years.

The bank’s growing market value has also attracted investor attention.
Its shares appreciated by more than 104 per cent during the year up to July 23, 2026, pushing its market capitalisation to approximately ₦5.18 trillion, making it one of Nigeria’s most valuable listed companies.

Beyond its financial performance, Zenith Bank has accelerated its expansion across Africa.

In April 2026, the bank completed the acquisition of Paramount Bank Kenya Limited, giving it a strategic foothold in East Africa’s largest economy.

The acquisition is expected to strengthen Zenith Bank’s trade finance, corporate banking and cross-border transaction capabilities within the region.
The bank also formally launched its subsidiary in Côte d’Ivoire, marking its entry into Francophone West Africa.

The new subsidiary provides Zenith Bank direct access to the eight-member West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU), significantly expanding its regional footprint.

Speaking during the launch, Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Adaora Umeoji, described the expansion as another milestone in fulfilling the vision of building a truly global African financial institution.

The bank is also preparing for another major milestone with plans to list on the London Stock Exchange in 2027.

The proposed listing is expected to provide access to deeper international capital markets, support larger cross-border transactions and enhance Zenith Bank’s global profile.

The international recognition of Zenith Bank has continued to grow.

At the Euromoney Awards for Excellence 2026, the bank received the prestigious titles of Africa’s Best Bank and Nigeria’s Best Bank, with the Nigerian award coming for the second consecutive year.

Reacting to the achievement, Dr. Umeoji attributed the success to the confidence of customers, the commitment of the bank’s workforce and its determination to build a world-class African financial institution.

Zenith Bank has also maintained its position as Nigeria’s Number One Bank by Tier-1 Capital for 17 consecutive years in The Banker magazine’s Top 1000 World Banks ranking.

It has equally received multiple recognitions from Global Finance and The Banker over the past several years.

With sustained profitability, improving asset quality, strong capital buffers, growing shareholder returns and an aggressive continental expansion strategy, Zenith Bank continues to distinguish itself as one of Africa’s strongest financial institutions.

Its latest financial performance, combined with international recognition and strategic expansion into new markets, reinforces its position as a leading force in Nigeria’s banking industry and a major player in Africa’s evolving financial landscape.
