Kano NDC defers congress over overwhelming presence of party bigwigs

Kano State chapter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has postponed its planned state congress for the election of new party executives.

State Chairman Hon. Husaini Isah Mai Riga said the decision followed a recent influx of prominent political figures into the party.

Mai Riga, in a statement signed by the party’s Director-General of Social Media, Adam Said Adam, noted that the development requires additional time to properly accommodate new entrants and ensure a smooth, inclusive congress.

“A new date for the congress will be communicated once all necessary preparations have been concluded,” Mai Riga said.

The postponement comes amid quiet realignments in Kano politics ahead of the 2027 general elections. The NDC is one of several smaller parties positioning to absorb defectors from the ruling NNPP and opposition APC.

Attempts to confirm the identities of the new entrants were unsuccessful at press time. Party sources declined to name the defectors, citing “ongoing consultations.”

The Kano NDC had scheduled its congress for this month to elect a new 27-member state executive council.
