2027: Mascot Kalu joins Abia Governorship race, promises transparency

Governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Mascot Uzor Kalu, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election, pledging to deliver transparent and accountable leadership if elected.

Kalu made his ambition known on Friday during a consultative visit to the APC State Working Committee and members of the party’s Executive Committee (EXCO), where he sought the support of party stakeholders ahead of the race.

Speaking at the meeting, the Abia State APC Chairman, Chijioke Chukwu, assured all aspirants of a level playing field, stressing that the party under his leadership would ensure a free, fair, and transparent primary process.

He reiterated the APC’s commitment to internal democracy and inclusiveness, urging aspirants to conduct their campaigns peacefully.

Addressing party faithful, Kalu expressed concern over what he described as a lack of transparency and accountability in the current administration of the state. He particularly faulted the 2026 budget, alleging that over ₦1 trillion was appropriated without adequate attention to critical sectors affecting women and youths.

The aspirant also criticised what he termed inflated project costs, citing road construction as an example.

According to him, while the Rivers State Government in 2023 awarded a 16-kilometre road project with two bridges for ₦19 billion, the Abia State Government, shortly after, approved the reconstruction of the 5.8-kilometre Port Harcourt Road to Julius Berger for ₦36 billion.

Kalu further lamented that despite Abia State receiving over ₦50 billion monthly from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), the impact of such funds is not evident in the living conditions of the people.

He accused the current administration of prioritising projects that do not directly improve the welfare of ordinary citizens.
Reflecting on his political journey, Kalu noted that he contested the 2023 governorship election alongside the incumbent governor, adding that both candidates had campaigned on promises of transparency and good governance.

“I contested for governor in 2023 alongside the current governor, and we both made promises centered on transparency, accountability, and the welfare of Abians. Unfortunately, today, the reverse appears to be the case,” he said.

He added that his previous experience as Chief of Staff has equipped him with the knowledge and capacity to provide purposeful leadership, promising to reposition the state for growth and development.

Kalu called on APC members to unite and work towards reclaiming power in the state, insisting that the party could not afford to remain passive while, in his words, Abia is “run like a one-man business.”

While soliciting the party’s support for his ambition, he pledged loyalty to the APC, assuring members that he would support whoever emerges as the party’s candidate if he does not secure the ticket.

The declaration signals the early buildup to the 2027 governorship race in Abia State, with political activities gradually gaining momentum within party structures.
