Grandmates school inter-house sports showcases determined young athletes

Resilience, energy, and competitive spirit defined Saturday’s biennial inter-house sports competition at Grandmates School, Isolo, Lagos, where student-athletes delivered impressive performances.

The Blue House with the superior power house performances staring athletes such as Nneka James that top the table in 200m girls category and the array of others that made it to the table top, clinched the championship title with 89 points.

The Green House with its two athletes Emeka Jideofor and Alex Anjorin, finishing first and second in two of the hurdles missed the championship title by the whiskers with 88 points on the table’s second position, a point less than the title winners.

While the Yellow House with an array of female athletes placed third as the Red House with abysmal performances claimed the table bottom.

The athletes competed in track and field such as 25m, 50m, 100m, 200m and 400m races.

Others were sack, lime, spoon, balloon, skipping and basket races.

The competition, featured athletes from some invited schools, had Landmark College Okota emerged winner in the 100m girls category, with athlete Blessing Okon braceing the tape in 1:3 sec.

In the boys relay that thrilled spectators with competitive performances between Whitesands School Lagos and Landmark ended in favour of Landmark with Abbey Lawal finishing the line before others.

Highlight of the event, the colourful march past that ignited the arena with applauses of admiration from spectators worn by the Red House.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) report, competition was to instill discipline, resilience, courage and teamwork in the students had in attendance parents, alumni and friends of the school.

The 15th edition of the competition, held at the Ansarudeen Sports Complex Isolo, had the theme “Together We Move: Power, Play and Pride,”

Speaking at the event while declaring open the competition earlier, the Director of the school, Mr Olusola Adepoju, reaffirmed the school’s commitment to an even education of the students.

Adepoju described the event as a platform to nurture and hone talents for that could represent the nation in various sports.

One of the athletes, Jideofor said that, his enthusiasm in the track and field transcends school competitions.

“I want to make it to the world stage; representing my country in big competitions and winning trophies.

“My preparation before the event today proved to me that with more effort I can make it to an enviable height soonest,” he said.

Chairman of the Sports Committee, Adenike Adepoju, highlighted the importance of sports in shaping confident and disciplined children.

She commended the school management, PTA executives, and stakeholders for their support.

Chairman of the occasion and PTA Chairman, Mr Uche Ohaji, praised the enthusiasm displayed by the students and described the event as a celebration of unity, discipline, and sportsmanship.
