Mayday! A call to unite against execution of democracy by Tinubu, his ‘Gunmen’

Democracy dies where freedoms enshrined in constitution are stifled, strangled; Tinubu with his incessant overseas trips like Nero's 'Fiddles while Rome burns'; Refusing opposition space to organize is akin to tying democracy to shooting range

Prof. Chris Mustapha Nwaokobia Jnr

I was forced by the troubling developments at home, over 10,712 Kilometres from my present location, to suspend the series captioned ‘2027: Between Politics, Ambition And Country First’ for this Mayday Call. We can talk about 2027 only when democracy survives the present madness at home.

Clearly, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the minders of his Presidency appear oblivious of the constant and consistent damage they are doing to democracy in Nigeria.

I do not care what the sycophants standing on the largely failing mandate of the Jagaban of Borgu think of this Mayday Call; I care about my Country Nigeria; I care about the Democracy that we fought for at huge personal costs, and that some died for; I care about the sustenance of the freedoms that democracy promises; I care about defending the plurality of choice; I care about good governance; I care about the Security of lives and property; and I care about the Rule of Law, of due process and of decency and decorum in leadership.

Sadly, with the news coming out of Kaduna and Lagos, where Tinubu’s ‘Gunmen’ and loyalists disrupt meetings of the Opposition, as was the case in Kaduna, and prevent the opposition from having access to a meeting venue earlier approved, as happened in Alimosho in Lagos State, then there is cause to worry.

Is the APC so mortally scared of the Coalition and, by Jove, the opposition that it must stifle constitutional freedoms and strangulate dissent?

One would have imagined that the contrived defections from other Political Parties to the APC would have given the APC a morale boost to allow the opposition to thrive.

With the Governors who have decamped to the APC and the massive majority it enjoys in the National Assembly, no thanks to the gale of defections contrived, and or procured, one would have imagined that the APC would at least proudly allow the opposition to enjoy the Constitutional Right to organize.

With the contrived crisis in the Labour Party, the PDP and the ones brewing in the SDP and the NNPP one would have imagined that the APC will let the African Democratic Congress ADC be, afterall they called the ADC the Amalgam of Desperate and Retired Politicians, so why is the APC mortally scared, why are they desperately sending democracy to the gallows through the repeated Constitutional infractions that endanger everything that defines democracy?

Why deny the ADC access to meeting venues? Why disrupt their meetings? Why is the APC obsessed with how to win the 2027 elections when it has refused to govern? President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is presently by far the most absentee President in the world on account of his incessant overseas trips, he travels while Nigeria burns, he travels in the face of widespread insecurity, he travels in the face of unmitigated hunger and disease, he travels like one overtaken by wanderlust, yet the sycophants ‘standing on his mandate’ see no wrong in it, they pride in his trip as enhancing our foreign policy, what Foreign Policy if I may ask?

A Country without Ambassadors and High Commissioners in most of its Foreign Missions cannot be said to be committed to proper, enduring diplomacy. But to his Court-jesters Tinubu is Nigeria, and Nigeria is Tinubu’s; he does no wrong.

The other day, he told a gathering of his Supporters that his government has exceeded since August the projected revenue for the year 2025, only to put in another request for a $1.7billion loan. I do not understand what informs the unbridled deceit, debauchery, perfidy and mendacity that defines the present watch.

Why have they elevated falsehood to an Act of State? If you are doing so well in terms of revenue inflow, why the obsession with borrowing? When you think about the relentless effort of the minders of this Presidency who hide behind the present value of the Naira in the lame defense of the huge national debt that Tinubu’s government has incurred, incurring almost in two years the total debt Buhari incurred in 8 years, then you will understand how shamelessly rudderless the present watch is.

And come to think of it, in the face of horrendous hunger and poverty with workers on a minimum wage that cannot take them to and from work monthly, Tinubu and his fellow politrickcal operators have increased their own Salary by 114% tendencious of the mannerisms that define arrogance and gross insensitiveness in power, Folks, what we have today is the rule of the most insensitive lot to have governed Nigeria, and such is the greatest threat to democracy.

When democracy provides for a few greedy and soulless Power-mongers, then its end is near.

Before I forget, what about the incessant harassment of Pro-democracy Activists and the Critics of the present watch, and what is the reason for the many arrests and persecution of my friend and brother, Citizen Omoyale Sowore? I hear that the reason the Police asked the Court for his Bank Statements is that they suspect that he has received about $100 million to help topple the government, ye ye dey smell, how can those who are consistently endangering democracy be hunting and hounding the defenders of democracy? Unusual times indeed.

I shall return to the series’ ‘2027: Between Politics, Ambition and Country First’ in a few days, God granting me the strength, but in the interim, I must, like the Prophets of old, call out the present watch to beware because the times and the tides are ominous.

And to my Countrymen and women, we MUST rise to defend democracy because ‘Democracy Dies Where The Freedoms Enshrined In The Constitution Are Stifled And Strangled’.

God Bless Nigeria.
